Once heard Warren Zevon say "It amazes me that Jagger got rich, while Hammond's still singing in bars." Absolutely. Check out some of these tracks -- in regard to the Stones "Beggars Banquet LP -- is Jagger doing a Hammond imitation or what? But this stuff is for grown-ups. All the fear, loneliness, and sleazy humor in this sector of American music is buried in Hammond's voice -- it grabs you by the throat.
It was not uncommon for white musicians in the folk movement of the early 60s to incorporate blues into their repertoire. Very few, however, made it their primary focus, the blues being generally considered the provice of “the American Negro” (in the terminology of those days). John Hammond was one of those few (Koerner, Ray & Glover being perhaps the most notable other example). As a result, this is one of the first albums of its kind – a white person performing straight rural blues, with absolutely no commercialism and an overriding determination to stay true to the spirit of the originals. This dedication to authenticity actually gives it a somewhat timeless feel; the tracks sound like they could have been recorded at any point between then and now. Hammond sings and accompanies himself on acoustic guitar and (for some reason, only on Side B) on harmonica. He plays guitar very well, but both his playing and his singing can display more passion than precision; there are frequent moments where either the rhythm, chord changes, or melody are more implied than stated… probably why a lot of folk musicians of the time made use of a second guitarist when making recordings. So I’d say it’s more of an album for paying close attention to than having on in the background. The selection of material is pretty excellent… there are three Robert Johnson songs (a spirited version of “Travelling Riverside Blues”, the rather odd “Milk Cow’s Calf Blues”, and “32-20 Blues”), a catchy treatment of Sleepy John Estes’ “Drop Down Mama”, Jimmy Reed’s “Little Rain Falling” (a subdued Chicago-style blues), the slow and sultry “Hitchhiking Woman” (a showcase for Hammond’s slide work), and the stuttering “Bull Frog Blues”. There are also a number of tracks that are perhaps more associated either with electric bluesmen or with blues-rock groups that did latter-day covers – “Statesborough Blues”, Willie Dixon’s “Seventh Son”, and Bo Diddley’s “Who Do You Love”, all quite energetic, plus a couple of slower ones, “Going Down Slow” and John Lee Hooker’s “Crawling Kingsnake”....
