One of the most exciting and influential groups to come out of Birmingham in the early 1960s, the Spencer Davis Group is recognized for their classic and ground-breaking recordings as well as for launching Steve Winwood's music career. In the mid '60s, they were one of the best (and most successful) bands on the British R&B scene. Winwood was a teenage phenomenon at the time, whose precociously soulful voice and bluesy keyboard work juiced up the sound based around the solid guitar work of Spencer Davis. The title song of the band's 1967 album GIMME SOME LOVIN' finds them at their peak, Winwood's joyful vocal and thunderous organ driving...The band's first American LP, issued more than two years after they had put out their first British recordings, consisted of a dozen tracks selected from various U.K. mid-'60s sessions. It was a solid introduction to the band for those who hadn't heard most of those, an audience, which, at the time, included virtually all Americans. Along with their first U.S. smash, "Gimme Some Lovin'," it had several British hit singles: "Somebody Help Me," "Keep on Running," and "When I Come Home...The remainder was comprised of great, covers and group originals.
