PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! We have served thousands of satisfied customers - far more than our feedback records indicate - and our aim is to continue to do so. Mid sixties folky and rock-y hip sounds of the era, it is Cass Elliot's voice that makes this more than your simple harmony singing act. An amazingly consistent album; certainly decent with the obvious comparisons to West Coast folkrock jangles & The Mamas and the Papas who this band evolved into...
The instrumentation changes from song to song. "Everybody's Been Talkin'" has a jangly guitar you'll hear later in albums by The Byrds. A surprising mid song backing arrangement punctuates "Do What They Don't Say." It's unusual how it works because the song has unexpected key changes in odd places.
"You Can't Judge a Book By the Cover" is very bluesy. "Do You Know What I Mean" echoes The Beatles's sound of '63-'64, except more bluesy, especially in the middle.
But it's the voices. In tune. Confident with challenging arrangements. Seeds of their future folk-rock activities can be heard in the male-female harmonic blends. The Mugwumps were short-lived quartet and remembered for their members Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty who would become one-half of the Mamas and the Papas; Zal Yanovsky would join the Lovin' Spoonful; and Jim Hendricks was the odd man out, not achieving any notable subsequent fame. The band was mentioned the lyrics of the Mamas and the Papas song Creeque Alley:
When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swathmore
But she changed her mind one day.
Standin’ on the turnpike, thumb out to hitchhike,
“Take me to New York right away.”
When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps;
Called John and Zal and that was the Mugwumps.
Each song is quick and energetic, and has a classic 60’s folk-rock feel. The harmonizing is spot on, particularly in Searchin’ and Everybody’s Been Talkin’ where the backups by Cass really shine through, as do the occasional high notes and almost-yelling vocals being hit on the male end. The expressive You Can’t Judge a Book by the Cover outshines the other eight songs on the album for sheer quality, of writing, singing, and performing. Surprisingly, the album doesn’t disappoint, and in fact turns it into a quick and relaxing easy listen. It’s a great tribute to music from the 60’s and though some of the songs sound vaguely familiar - due to the large amount of music of this type made in the time period - each song manages to hold its own with the listener’s ears and stay new.
Cass Elliot, better known as Mama Cass, called The Mugwumps “the first folk rock group ever”, on Johnny Carson. Whether or not that’s true is almost irrelevant. Regardless of whether The Mugwumps were literally the first folk rock group, the rerelease of their only recordings is a welcome release to any fan of sixties folk rock.
