EXCELLENT 1968 ORIGINAL
THE 'NOW SOUNDS' OF THE "BOSSTOWN" SOUND
The Eyes Of....
The Beacon Street Union
USA - MGM Records - SE 4517
TOP CLEAN 1968 original first pressing...in thick gatefold cover...next to The Ultimate Spinach, the Beacon Street Union released two formidable psychedelic classics, this, the first, is arguably their best...a surprisingly strong affair with more than a few great tracks....The record contains a fairly diverse blend of garage driven original material, with liberal doses of fuzz guitar and organ, yielding a strong psychedelic flavor. Decent production manages to remove most of their rough garage edges. The singer would sound completely at home on an album that was overtly garage. One strange flavor is "Four Hundred and Five" is immediately obvious the song is screaming along at warp speed, an enhancement the group laid on the listener in the psychedelic days of '68....The Beacon Street Union added a considerable amount of angst, and even paranoia to their songs. Whether the subject is love gone wrong, or the fear-inducing strangeness of the world surrounding us, there's no such thing as a "happy" Beacon Street Union tune. The lyrics dance on the edge of hopelessness, existing in that exact final moment before unavoidable disaster strikes.
The band's odes to alienation culminate in "The Prophet", the tale of a beleaguered Christ-figure whose attempts to save the world are met with indifference. In the world that this album crafts, the triumph of nihilism is a foregone conclusion. Rather than redemption being merely impossible, it is a concept which does not even exist!
Overall the album is reasonably atmospheric, a solid psychedelic album, enjoyable to psych fans. There are few things more eerily compelling than the nightmare that was taking shape before the eyes of the Beacon Street Union
