Original 1972 British progressive rock collectible on the famed VERTIGO label in a wonderful designed and clean gatefold cover....
There´s plenty to enjoy on this adventurous album titled "Belladonna" and it´s a nice example of the creative tunes, riffs, rhythms, and improvisation style of the band under Ian Carr´s leadership. And the album art is totally fitting with the music, quite nice.
Belladonna is most definitely the most elusive and sought after of Ian Carr's Vertigo label vinyl releases. By the time this record was recorded only Brian Smith remained of the Solar Plexus/Nucleus line-up of Ian Carr's origin, but in the new blood recruited, Carr was able to instill that same kind of energy and spirit that had made the previous Nucleus recordings such critical (if not commercial) successes.
The title track in particular has that rhythmic quality not dissimilar to Snakehips' Dream, a kind of irisistable foot tapping most 'moving' beat that is totally and hypnotically infectious from its percussive Ian Carr led intro to it's pure jazz/prog rock electric mid section.
The piece Suspension is apparently Ian Carr's most satisfying studio track; one of those single takes that only happen once or twice in a career ... do we have to say more? All in all slightly mellower, spacier with a groove with a nice extra layer of keyboards...
The aggressive reeds of Carr leads the way on most of these infusion injected progressive rocking songs. Carr and Miles Davis seemed to blaze similar paths in the late 60's and into the 70's, utilizing a large band approach that included lots of spacey jams that evoked rock firepower, free form jazz/progressive, and psychedelic atmosphere. Belladonna has a slightly different feel of past Nucleus/Carr albums, as there is that larger keyboard presence, thanks to Gordon Beck and Dave Macrae, who add some wild electric keyboard playing. Macrae especially rips it up with an extended solo on "Summer Rain." The pieces here take on a darker tone, and will remind you a bit of Bitches Brew era Miles Davis, or even the third album from the Soft Machine. The amazing guitarist Alan Holdsworth puts in an appearance on this album as well, adding a mercurial solo on the raging "Remadione" ,nasty wah-wah licks on "Mayday", and an extended tour-de-force on the funky "Hector's House." Carr's heated work permeate each track, ranging from tender melodies to wild staccato bursts.
This is great jazz/progrock-fusion, from a band that never seems to get mentioned much when the topic of influential 70's groups comes up. Highly recommended!
