RARE 1973 original BRITISH pressing in gatefold cover... completely different and by far superior to the lesser USA issue....
Outstanding album by superb British Rock band Spooky Tooth, which is also the second recording by the original lineup of the group, now including the original drummer Mike Kellie, fresh back in 1973 from his stint with Three Man Army. This is another strong effort by the band, its best since the sixties, here with another set of great compositions by Gary Wright, superb vocals by leader Mike Harrison and excellent instrumental work.
The tracks start off quite well, starting off with the spiritual "Ocean of Power." Lead vocalist Mike Harrison doesn't waste any time as he wails in increasing intensity "See them laugh, see them laugh, see how they stare blind at my feelin'!" With Wright's backing harmonies, the song is soon roaring through its chorus with conviction. As he did on the last album's ballad ("Holy Water"), Harrison also turns in another breathtaking vocal performance with "Wings on My Heart." Harrison's unique rasp is powerful but never grandstanding. Just open, with no gimmicks. It pretty much makes this song. As an aside, the guitar solo is very much in the style of George Harrison (who was a friend of Wright's), giving the song an additional Beatles quality. Wright enters to take the lead vocals for "As Long as the World Keeps Turning"; again, very catchy with great harmonies. Nice keys intro, which has a slightly 'underwater' effect -- don't know if deliberate or accidental.
"All Sewn Up" is solid. The final three songs, though, are a treat for fans with Harrison and Wright sharing lead vocals and trading off verses, as they often did in the band's earlier era. "Pyramids," co-written by drummer Mike Kellie, brings a magnificent and satisfying conclusion to the Spooky Tooth with both vocalists present and accounted for, as both sing like they mean it. This is also one of the strongest tunes of the album, marked by a thundering, ascending minor-key riff that repeats throughout as Harrison and Wright question "I know where I'm going... but where do I come from?"
If you are fan of early Spooky Tooth you may find "Witness" to be a lost gem. This one is definitely worth it for its best tracks, which easily matches the best of Spooky Tooth. Witness also sounds like it was better recorded relative to its predecessor "You Broke My Heart, So I Busted Your Jaw"
Early Spooky Tooth fans will find this album in par to their earlier work and this is definitely great classic rock, which loses nothing of its luster from the sixties. Although mostly underappreciated, Spooky Tooth earned their place in the pantheon of underground rock with honors. Warmly recommended!
