Description
A few years back I used to own a couple of indie labels here in Sydney (Phantom, Freakzone, and Messiah Complex), and I've just been fossicking through some old boxes from storage, and found odd items I should disperse amongst you lot.
Here's one o' them:
ARTIST: MACHINATIONSTRACKS: "AVERAGE INADEQUACY" / "ARABIA"
FORMAT: …vinyl 7” single…
LABEL: PHANTOM RECORDS
CATALOGUE #: PH-12
MADE IN: AUSTRALIA
RELEASE DATE: 26 AUGUST 1981 (I always kept precise release dates of all our early releases)
This was their first ever release, and it remains one of thee greatest and most melodic and utterly catchy synth-pop 45s released ANYWHERE in the world. Bar none. After they signed to Gudinski's White Label Records, they re-recorded it and released it as their major label debut, but that version was not a patch on this (unbiased opinion via the band themselves, and all current reviews at the time)...to many this remains their pinnacle, despite later chart successes. (When they reformed for two gigs earlier this year, 2012, it was this song that sent the crowd nuts more than any other...y' had to be there...'twas a massive dance-fest.)
"Arabia" was more of the same - and remained a Phantom-only release. Both tracks produced by the legendary Lobby Loyde.
