Label/Format: Vertigo – original swirl format with the first issue larger spiral on side two. These have matt fairly smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only quite light, fine and mostly faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This delicate album plays impressively.

Brief Info: The second Magna Carta album, but the first they issued on the prized Vertigo Swirl label, the first was on Fontana. They were a progressive folk-rock band who made several albums in the 1970s and into the 1980s. This one of their better sellers and arguably their finest album, it actually briefly charterd peaking at 55 in the UK. Still difficult to find on the large spiral format in better condition, this one appears only very modestly played and includes a host of extra musicians including Rick Wakeman formerly of prog rock band Yes and Strawbs.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a typical Vertigo unlaminated matt gatefold format. Printed and made in England, uncredited, includes the original Vertigo warning inside and the VO PRICE CODE boxed text on the back. It comes with the 1970 polylined Spiral inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A very attractive cover and this does it splendid justice with minimal wear. A clean and still fresh front with only a little rubbing to the corner tips with the odd crease on a couple of them. Any marks or blemishes few and faint, the lack of rubbing and creasing to the main surface areas is always good news, as it the lack of sticker issues which these Vertigo covers are highly prone.

Cover Back: Virtually the same in all respects with the lack of ring wear being a major plus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A crease on the top fold apart, there is little to fault inside.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush with any rubbing little, small and light, mostly to the corner tips.

Bottom Edges: Light to moderate patchy rubbing on these storage edges, then as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening little and light. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: An excellent spine and seldom seen as such, this has minimal wear with just a light smallish rub at the top. Solid, straight with hardly any trace of compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The text is fully present and unworn as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs or creases quite small and reasonably light, fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this typically wear-prone matt Vertigo early 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better still. A very impressive Swirl inner, one hardly aged with the correct polylining and date-coded B 1/0470 (April 1970) with double British patent numbers. Both window circles undamaged and neat as issued, the lining intact and still clear. All edges naturally unsplit and the paper has minimal hint of discolouration. Even these inners now are fast becoming rare this clean and undamaged.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, mostly wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality Vertigo album plays mostly even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, being a delicate mostly acoustic album the odd contact sound is near impossible to avoid, but this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record, this really is quite a fragile and quite challenging album. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
