An often misunderstood album, this album (aside from the 1971 "reunion" album) was the final record by the Mamas & the Papas. It has held up incredibly well over time, and sounds better today than when it was released in mid-1968. The centerpiece of the album is "Dream a Little Dream," which very well may be the finest cover version that the group ever recorded, and in the end, was a very nice way to end the group's short but incredible career. The album also contains some excellent John Phillips material such as "12:30" (a minor hit), "Rooms," and "Too Late." These three tracks form a mini-medley in the middle of the second side, and add a lot of dimension to the record. Cut at the Phillips' home studio, the album has a simple sound, but when the vocal majesty cuts through on such tracks as "Mansions" (one of the band's lost masterpieces), it's faultless.

The Mamas and the Papas final hour was their finest.  One track alone, the dark, ominous “Mansions” has got to be the finest example of the West Coast group harmonies circa psychedelic era, and it may well anticipate the arrival of Charles Mansion and his cohorts in both the mood and the title. Frankly, we don’t even know if the title of the song is a pun on Manson’s name or not. Who cares – it is a piece if indescribable,  dark, haunting beauty.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS VERY GOOD+ (VG+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)         White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 100:1.

(e)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3; Inside gatefold has some light ring wear as well

-       Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the top and bottom seams.

-       Visible shelf wear noted on the spine

-       Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged  (just a beginning of the split seam)

-       The gatefold cover has partially split seams on 3 out of 4 "legs" of the cover (about 1, 5 and 6 inches / 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters).

-       Cover has a minor tear (dent) on the spine (less than 1/4")  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)
