Man
'Be Good To Yourself At Least Once A Day'
United Artists, UK, 1972
UAG 29417
GLORIOUS WELSH band - I should say legendary Welsh band actually seeing as they dominated the underground hippy scene for several years craving out quite a niche for themselves on the UK college, University and concert hall circuit. Musically they had much in common with the American San Francisco acid rock scene relying on long winded songs with copious amounts of jamming and killer lead guitar work from the fingers of Clive John and Michael Jones. The vibe here is relaxed but defiant, studied but wild and totally in synch with the times. Only two tracks a side - which gives you some idea of the sort of musical journey everyone is embarking on - spearheaded by the delightfully subversive 'C'Mon' and flanked by 'Keep On Crinting', 'Life On the Road' and their masterpiece 'Bananas'.
The album cover has to be seen to be believed - it's a brilliant work of art featuring a fold out map of Wales that opens up when you flip the gate-fold cover open - I've never ever seen this sort of technology used on any other album sleeve. In fact the only similar item I've ever seen is a NYC map that I bought which folds out in exactly the same way. This must have cost the band and label a fortune to manufacture but its stunning in every respect. Never found in perfect condition - this one is totally MINT!
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
