The '60s group Manfred Mann is now considered, more than ever, one of the finest and most respected bands from that era. Their numerous pop hits were R&B-based with an undercurrent of jazz - a very unusual but winning combination of playing style and substance. First with Paul Jones and with Mike d'Abo later on, the band managed to compete strongly despite constantly changing musical trends of the '60s. As a result, their records have a timeless quality that many of their contemporaries never attained.

Founding member Mike Vickers (guitar/sax/flute) left Manfred Man in late 1965, to pursue a career in orchestral music.Tom McGuinness then moved from bass to guitar, and Jack Bruce (who had recently been with The Graham Bond Organization and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers) came in on bass. Bruce stayed long enough to appear on the EP Instrumental Asylum, and the hit single "Pretty Flamingo", their second UK #1. However he soon left himself to form Cream, and was replaced by Klaus Voorman. It was then that lead singer Paul Jones finally left (he had been planning to for a year, but stayed whilst they looked for a replacement). They found a new singer in Mike a'Abo. At the same time they also switched record labels, moving to Fontana.

Their third album, As Is, came out in 1966. It signalled a shift in the band's direction (not surprising considering the changes they had just undergone), moving away from R&B and towards more of an arty pop sound. With mostly original material, it featured lots of studio tricks and elaborate arrangements. Mann himself also expanded his keyboard set-up, making use of the Mellotron for the first time.

Despite its artistic merits, the album turned out to be not such a chart success as its two predecessors. However it did generate another hit single - a cover of Bob Dylan's "Just Like A Woman", which made it to #10.

 THE VINYL HAS A PLEASING DEEP LUSTRE, HAS BEEN WELL CARED FOR WITH VERY FEW SURFACE MARKS OR SCRATCHES AND HAS VERY LITTLE IN THE WAY OF POPS OR CRACKLES - I WOULD RATE IT AS BEING IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.

THE LAMINATED SLEEVE IS CLEAN AND SHINY AND HAS ONLY MINOR WEAR. THE UNLAMINATED REVERSE OF THESE 60’S ALBUMS ARE USUALLY GRUBBY WITH EVERYDAY HANDLING - AND WHILE THIS COPY IS NOT PRISTINE IT IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.

 THE ORIGINAL FONTANA LABELS ARE IN NICE ORDER WITH NO WRITING OR ANNOTATIONS.

QUITE A SCARCE ALBUM, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION. YOU WILL DO WELL TO FIND A BETTER COPY AT THIS LOW STARTING PRICE.

RECORD GRADING GUIDE

"MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler."

As well as the above grades, Near Mint is often used as well; this is really for a record that appears new but is known to have been played because the label has light spindle marks or because it has come from a previous owner and is assumed to have been played by them. For records which appear to fall between the accepted grades, + and - are also often added to the grading.
