Description
MANFRED MANN
"AS IS"
on the original Black & Silver label FONTANA RECORDS TL 5377 from 1966.
FIRST pressing matrix nos. ending "1L" and "2L" for side 1 and 2.
Popularising Rhythm and Blues was done by capable hands of such as The Yardbirds, Rolling Stones, and Manfred Mann, particularly to a mainstream radio audience.
Many credible hit singles are dotted throughout the 1960's from this excellent band - but they did have their moments of instability and doubts - especially on losing their iconic frontman Paul Jones. He was the 'face' of the Manfreds, wearing the right mod clothes, having the photogenic looks the girls screamed for and the magazines loved, and the dance moves that mesmerized fans. He was also very well spoken, so could capably be the spokesman for the music and the band in the press too (see 'youtube' for some great vintage footage).
How to replace such a talisman must have worried the band, but they didn't have to worry when Mike D'Abo came their way - an excellent songwriter and practically the same atributes as Jones as a frontman too! They were soon back in the charts as if they'd never stopped for breath.
This is the introductory album for their new 'front-mann' - and there were two different covers for it; The 'Alcove' issue, which is often seen - and the withdrawn 'Train Cover', which is remarkably rare and seldom seen. I recall one US dealer asking $400 whenever a copy could be found, and I saw this for the first ever time when he was selling a copy at a record convention.
It's a pleasure for me to offer for auction any LP is this condition, especially a rare gem as this is!
Sometimes an excuse for selling something in bad shape is by stating it sold "as is" - well THIS time "AS IS" means "OUTSTANDING"!
The VINYL condition is SPECTACULAR shape at NEAR MINT!
No 'minus' about it - the disc is clear as can be, sounds like new, very little sign of play.
LABLE condition is brilliant NEAR MINT!
The COVER is laminated flip-back and grades VG+ to VG++, due to some handling wear and a couple of bends at corners. The card and text of the rear is clean, with no pen, only light aging (there's a slight mottle to part of one of the flip-back seams).
An outstanding rarity from one of the top bands of the mid-sixties.
