Label/Format: Bronze, first press ‘Age of Man’ format with the Island credits on the rim and the ILPS catalogue number as seen. These have matt, gently textured surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple of light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Side band name on side two appears a little rubbed, this is because is fall upon a on a ‘rustic’, textured part of this label, these are natural traits of some labels of this time and not really wear as such. This more elusive first issue record appears hardly played with great sound.

Up and Down Movement: A gentle trace. Few vintage records will ever be perfectly flat, any issues with significant movement or tracking will be mentioned in detail if applicable.

Lateral Movement (Side-to-Side): Quite mild movement, this has no affect on sound pitch. Only more severe cases of this will have.

Rarity: First issue copies of this are quite scarce. They initially came with a inner that included a cut-off corner to register for a small plot of land in Wales. This area seen in close-up. Quickly this was replaced with a similar that did not include it. Fully intact, unused examples with the mail order part are far more elusive.

Brief Info: The fifth album by the progressive rock Earth Band fronted by 1960s legend Manfred Mann. With a theme of ecology and well-being of the planet, early buyers had the opportunity to send away part of the original inner sleeve for a 1 foot square piece of land in Wales – apparently many did so – hence finding the first issue inner sleeve fully intact becomes far more difficult. This was a genuine offer to own this area of land. This is an impressive Island credit first issue and plays lovely The cover also clean and attractive, the scarce inner fully intact barely creased.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A single matt format with slightly rough surfaces. This has the correct Bronze ILPS (Island credit) catalogue number. Printed and made in England by Robor Limited, includes the first inner sleeve with the small cut-out area for the land claim.

Cover Front: The odd small tip crease, any other creasing little, gentle and faint. Generally clean and still quite fresh with hardly any rubbing. This very attractive overall.

Cover Back: Very similar with any traces of toning or ageing very light again. The lack of ring wear always good news.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both mostly straight with minimal hint of wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with any thickening minuscule. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression patchy and light. All text is perfect and unworn, also nicely centred, the surface unfaded and clean as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs or creasing very small and light, very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this wear-prone original 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): an unlined card inner that includes the small coupon designed to be cut and posted to register for the small plot of land in Wales. This area unused and fully intact. The only clue of age is on the adhesive side edges that have darkened as glue does as it gets older. Still clean and hardly creased, the top recessed opening neat with any thickening or burring small and light just right of centre. The edges intact and neat.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very light, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This impressive progressive rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
