Description
SCOTT JOPLIN was a strict piano teacher, who inspired fealty from his pupils Scott Hayden and Brun Campbell. They both learned Joplin's epochal composition, the "Maple Leaf Rag" from the manuscript, well before it was published in 1899, and retained it all their lives.
Brun Campbell, who was white, eventually moved to Venice, California. It was there he operated his tiny barber shop at 711 Venice Boulevard, and for a short time, ran the "Brun Recording Company." Campbell recorded the Maple Leaf as an homage to his great friend and mentor. The label proudly proclaims, "As taught him by SCOTT JOPLIN in 1899 - First White Pianist to Play It."
Brun retained his ancestral Scottish frugality. When asked why this record had only one side, he tersely retorted, "If they want another song, they'll have to buy another record!"
711 Venice Boulevard happens to be just around the block from my house. It's still a hair salon today! I've gone by there many times, hoping maybe I'd step through a time portal and find old Brun entertaining his customers.
This original, 1947, un-numbered, single-sided "Brun" record is in lovely E condition.

I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
