Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive, but spindle marks are nearer moderate, especially on side two. But have no fears, this beautifully clean record plays with SUPERB sound throughout.

Cat Number: S 63835.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 157 grams. A real heavyweight, especially for CBS at the back end of the 60s.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Very Scarce: not as rare as his debut album, but still with a hefty catalogue value. This CBS original is seldom seen or offered. The cover spine has issues as explained further down, but the record looks and plays with fantastic clean sound and is a real gem. This my first ever copy.

Brief Info: Marc Brierley’s second album, a talented singer-songwriter whose debut album commands huge prices (if one can be found). This CBS follow-up is almost equally elusive and now his sound is more polished with some really lovely songs, none better than ‘The Room’ that opens side two. For fans of Donovan, Al Stewart and even Cat Stevens, this far lesser-known artist will surely appeal?, and this superb record does him maximum justice.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: only really marked down for colouring in of the top spine fold (hasten to add VERY quickly NOT by me). An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. The front is single thickness and the entrance is via the centrefold – hence this is a delicate cover, the spine particularly vulnerable. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. Includes the CBS promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Not a great deal of wear on the main surfaces with just some fine rubbing and tipping-in on the spine edge and a small rub on the bottom left corner tip. Any creasing or marks gentle and light and little detracts from the main graphic which is quite clean and still attractive.

Cover Back: Some burring to the edges with the main surface again showing little wear or creasing. The lack of ring wear another plus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside has little to fault, and even the central entrance area is unworn and solid. These so often get split and torn, but this has stood-up well.

Top Edges: Some thickening to the back with a little fairly gentle burring.

Bottom Edges: The end panel of the back has thickened, the single thickness front has faired well however.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is clean, quite sharp with little wear at all, protected by the back as this has pulled to left with the spine being tilted. The back edge has thickened and rubbed. No entrance here as the record is stored from within.

=Spine and Text: The spine is not so pretty: the top edge had clearly scuffed and the previous owner decided to tip it in – and with no major degree of skill. So the top fold is a little rugged near the top and bottom. But somewhat against the odds, the spine face itself is pretty much intact and incredibly ALL the text is present unworn. Still mostly solid and straight but compressed with a tilt to left, the back fold is perfectly fine. So a worn spine fold, but not torn or split but some flaking in places. Clearly not for the more discerning collector, but as I have said before, you cannot play a cover – and the record is superb and that, for me anyway, is the more important factor.

Corners: The spine are only in fair condition, the right ones are rubbed but far neater, these retain finer shape.

Cover Summary: Mostly attractive, but the spine top fold has wear and tipping-in, this mostly seen end-on, so the main faces are seen to much better advantage and on that basis, this is still a very respectable cover. No for all, but many will be happy with it, especially so as this is quite a rare one.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): an unlined CBS promotional inner from the late 60s. The owner wrote the title and artist on one top edge. This has some creasing and crinkle but all edges unsplit with no repairs. Overall, solid and still quite attractive with any ageing modestly light.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: side two better still. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with some very fine and light surface marks seen under bright angled light, but these have no affect on play and very few at all on side two. Visually a very fine vintage record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album and record plays even above it’s visual grading with very little to fault at all. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and my play-grade was a pleasure – this copy being my first. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this elusive record and one that merits high recommendation (if the cover spine wear is of no major issue).

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
