Marcel Evans, Coast singer

He was with The Drifters

By PETE TATTERSALL

Marcel Evans, the honey-voiced, one-time member of The Drifters and a
fixture of the Coast music scene, died Friday.

Evans died at Lakeview Regional Medical Center in Covington, La., said
his wife, Dee Dee Evans.

In addition to The Drifters, Evans also toured with The Spinners,
Brooklyn Bridge, The Four Tops and Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs.
His first solo album, "Going Places," produced the popular song "Sweet
Gemini," and his first country album, "The Singer," earned Evans the
title of CMA Mississippi Lifetime State Ambassador of Country Music in
1997.

Recently, Evans was a regular performer at Casino Magic Biloxi.

"He loved Casino Magic, and the whole Pinnacle family. And he just
really enjoyed, through his music, touching so many lives," said Dee
Dee Evans.

With the advent of Katrina, the Evanses evacuated to Pensacola and were
taken in by family members Ron and Michele McCorvey, she said.

"We lost everything in Hurricane Katrina," said Dee Dee Evans. "Please
let everybody know that Marcel loved the Coast. He loved the
Mississippi Gulf Coast and he wanted to be the musical ambassador for
the state of Mississippi. It's just a terrible loss."
