Label/Format: Decca – matt with smooth surfaces, that has the deep ring ridge.

Label Conditions: Both clean, still fresh and attractive. Spindle marks are less than moderate, just a little thicker than most I offer so they show a little more. But have no fears, this vintage record plays superbly well – or I would not offer it. Indeed even being played on my highly revealing LP12, this has hardly anything of note to fault at all.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. Fairly typical.

Rarity: Scarce: and hard to find in clean playing condition. This one dates back to the mid-1960s and most that surface are heavily played, even trashed. A quite delicate folk album with any blemishes (or worse) with nowhere to hide.

Brief Info: Even the cover looks like a real vintage piece, all in glorious black and white with Marianne sitting casually on a large sofa type chair. This is her debut album from way back 1965, although it was her highest charting album, it is never easy to find in clean condition and was not even issued in the United States. In her early years, she had a clear, pure voice, very different from later albums from the 1970s. Marianne came to prominance via a meeting with Stones produced Andrew Loog Oldham and a doomed relationship with Mick Jagger. This vintage gem features her mostly with voice and guitar, a sparse but beautiful album, rarely bettered and highly desirable. This copy on offer is a very strong one with a solid and attractive cover and a record that plays impressively. Not the cleanest of productions from way back in 1965 with a little sibilance on the vocals in places – this nothing to do with wear, simply the way it was engineered and produced. Indeed this is pretty much true of all the four Decca albums. Quite a difficult record that will be challenging to find a great deal better.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: Yes: four tiny tippex marks on the back to obscure four tiny pen marks, this from the long distant past.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: this NOT taking into account of four tiny tippex/pen marks on the back. Any degrading for fairly small blemishes is purely subjective, best make up your own mind. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This covers the folds and ends on the spine back. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace.

Lamination & Front: Firstly, this cover is made with very thin card – nothing unusual in that for 1960s Decca albums, but it does so often mean laminate issues. Well this front has faired well overall and still looks attractive with only a little gentle lifting on the spine edge that with normal viewing shows little. Clarifoil so prone to shrinkage over time, lifting is seldom avoided altogether and bowing is also common. A few mostly gentle and small creases, these mostly on the spine edge and hardly any away from the sides. Hence the graphic looks lovely under the still shiny and clear laminate that has no peeling and minimal traces of any dulling. Ultra faint rim impression being critical that few can ever hope to avoid totally.

Cover Back: The unprotected back has only modestly aged with a little darkening or gentle grubbiness/set-off. It has hardly any creasing ( a small few fine ones on the spine edge) or rubbing at all and the fragile card has faired well, and do bare in mind this cover is potentially getting very close to 50. As mentioned already, four small tippex marks that semi-obscure equally small pen marks near song titles.

Top Edge: Minimal wear at all to the fold and hardly any bowing either. A little thickening to the card end that again is seldom avoided.

Bottom Edge: Similar to above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with very little wear at all, any thickening or burring minimal with no feathering or tears. Even the white strip on the front where the laminate ends a few millimeters short of full width, is clean with just the odd minuscule trace of toning. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Quite solid and straight with any compression light. All text is present under the mainly solid and intact laminate – a little peeling at the very ends that registers little. The text also well centred on quite a narrow depth.

Corners: Any corner rubbing is light with just the odd tiny tip crease. These retain very fine or better shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile mid-1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. A few blemishes, but in terms of real wear, only light, the small tippex/pen marks will mean not for the purist, but with most of these seen in very aged and even damaged conditions, it will please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): an early style Decca inner with some crinkle and fairly mild creasing. The lining ultra clear as seen through two neat, mainly crisp window circles, all edges unsplit with no repairs needed here. The only minor repair was a split on the back window circle. This is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(–): side one has only very fine surface marks seen under bright angled light, side two has a few more visible, but totally superficial surface marks that have no sound at all. Still a very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. Decca records were of ultimate quality, more resilient and tough. Few records this impressive age will fail to have a few minor surface blemishes at best, there are no penetrating scratches and the disc plays impressively well (or I would not offer it). Indeed, this vintage, delicate album will not prove easy to find much better for sound. Indeed this was my own personal copy until (after a long search) one showed up almost as made, those are massively difficult to find. So this is not for the visual perfectionist, but with sound this clean, it will again please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This generally well preserved record plays even above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and detailed sound. On some vocals, purely within the production and engineering, there is some sibilance which is totally normal of course. That is the emphasis on the ‘ess’ sound due to miking at the time. This not uncommon on dynamic vocal phrasing at the time, some Melanie albums have it also, just one other that springs immediately to mind. The gentle tick is nigh-on impossible to avoid on such material but no piledriver old stylus have ruined this one and this fragile record still offers impressive sound – even on a highly revealing LP12 turntable for which this was never really designed. That said, this album was not issued in stereo or in the United States at all. Even with a few minor surface marks, few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with no irritating noise or tracking issues. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality record and being a big fan of her early pop-folk albums, this proved again a lovely copy to listen to. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
