Label/Format: Decca – original unboxed format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with only light to light+ faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Yet another from the collection of little played records, this has a few more spindle marks than most from this source but are still extremely light and this record plays to absolute perfection from start to finish. If a better looking and sounding copy of this actual record can be found, I sure would like to see and hear it.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 132 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Marianne’s third album and what a beauty it is too. Featuring some classic folky songs written by highly respected artists like Bert Jansch, Mick Taylor, Tom Paxton, Jon Mark and Donovan – ‘Sunny Goodge Street was written specially for her by Donovan. Classic traditional songs are included too. Marianne’s early Decca albums are delightful and nothing like her later works, which again are fine records but just very different. None of her 60s albums are easy to find let alone in top conditions and this particular album is one of the most elusive, it did not sell very well and is now her most prized. The record is a real beauty with immaculate playing surfaces and audio quality that could only be matched and never beaten, this plays to studio perfection. The owner bought all his albums in stereo when available and owned stereo equipment right back almost to the time of its availability. Thus even the mono albums were not subjected to piledrive heavyweight stylii that ruined so many classic albums. The cover, featuring a lovely picture of the young Marianne, is strong, the front especially. The back shows its age a little more but is still very respectable indeed. Anyone wanting this fine and pretty album should be very pleased with the fine all round copy. Yes, even the original is in better than excellent condition.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: Around EX overall, the front being slightly better, the back having some toning to the edges. A single format with Clarifoil laminate on the front that wraps around the closed edges, but only on the back via the spine. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace.

Lamination & Front: A lovely front with solid, clear laminate that is practically all solidly adhered wtih just a fine sliver down the spine edge. The only blemish of note is a moderate crease near the bottom left corner, any other creases are few, small and fine. This one has a very fine semi-gloss sheen rather than a full gloss – quite normal on some covers of this vintage. There is minimal traces of any friction rubs or dulling and any record rim impression is slight. This is quite unusual and significant on such a thin card cover. Any surface marks are tiny and faint and the portrait of the young Marianne is gorgeous. This delicate and flimsy vintage cover front will prove hard to find much better.

Cover Back: The back shows little real wear but has darkened around the edges with some light to moderate toning. This can be seen on my picture and if this is an issue, please do not bid. A mild, fine ring rim mark near the left side is modest in comparison to many seen and few avoid it totally. Barely any creasing and no rubbing but a few small tone spots away from the edges are just apparent. A highly respectable back and these type rarely wear well unless kept in cottonwool.

Top Edge: Unworn.

Bottom Edge: No real wear, very minor and light thickening to the back edge panel if being critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with only slight compression, the ends are gently tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid laminate that has just a couple of very fine surface hairline creases.

Corners: All four are very neat and sharp and show little wear.

Cover Summary: A solid and attractive all round example of this very fragile mid-60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This still attractive, the front especially so item should please many collectors.

The Inner: EX+ with the ‘Patent applied for’ text. This is polylined and this is immaculate seen through a pristine sharp and undamaged window on both sides. Some lightish glue darkening on one side near the seams but they all remain unsplit. Any ageing is slight as is any creasing and this vintage inner is just right for its considerable age.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Probably undergraded at a stunning Mint(-), bar a few light spindle marks, this would have deserved a full Mint grading, a truly exceptional 1966 mono record. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed on high quality Decca vinyl. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with two immaculate playing surfaces that are practically devoid of any marks. We all know what these vintage mono records could and usually were played on and the damaging results incurred. Nothing like this here and the owner played all his records on stereo equipment and there’s the difference. Visually a super record that should please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault, this has pristine perfect and one hundred percent enjoyable sound. This too on a critically revealing LP12 front end that such records were never really designed to be played on. Strong, totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. No surface sounds or pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Both playing surfaces and audio quality will remind those of a certain age what such records looked like when first purchased all those years ago. Few copies will match let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel certain. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, arguably her very best ever. This actual record will prove close to impossible to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. This beautiful disc could mean a significant upgrade for many collectors.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
