Description
I bought this album new from an import shop in Melbourne in 1968,and taped it on reel to reel. it has only been played a half a dozen times since then, most recently just before listing. The vinyl on both sides is clean and shiny, with only a few minor scuffs from being taken in and out of the paper cover.(I have put a plastic inner sleeve inside the paper cover to give it more protection) It is a loud mono US pressing and both sides play loud and clear. There is some very low level surface noise on the run in tracks not noticeable while the band is playing, with the exception of the bass solos on "Exhibition" on side two, where the surface noise is very faint in the quieter passages, not enough to overwhelm the music in any way( I noticed it while listening on good quality Sennheiser headphones, on speakers it was even less noticeable). There are no scratches or skips and both labels are clean(VG). The cover is a strong thick cardboard,there are no splits or tears and the spine is still rigid and can easily be read in the shelf. There is some light ring wear noticeable at the top and bottom of the front cover from years of storage. (This seems to blend into the black and white cover photo). The back cover is clean with no tears or writing, there is some light yellowing around the edges, again from years of storage, but there is still a dull sheen on both the front and the back covers(VG) The whole of side one is taken up by the track "Capricorn Moon" with, after the intro, Marion Brown playing the lead for almost half the track, after which Alan Shorter takes the lead, near the end the rhythm section take respective solos with bowed bass and Ali creating tonal variations on the side drum(I'm guessing he's using his elbow on the skin to alter the pitch of the drum). Marion Brown and Alan Shorter both have a more tonal approach than other artists on the ESP label from the tight intros through the solos, although there is still the free improvisation within the overall structure. In "Capricorn Moon" the rhythm section is also in a more conventional role with a consistent bass line for most of the track.
