MARTIN McBAIN - "WINTER ON THE HARBOUR"
Original pressing...on small Tasmanian independent label, CANDLE RECORDS (catalogue number: CFPS-121)...comes in lovely textured-card cover...
This truly is an amazing discovery...it shoots virtually to the top of the list of Australian 70's-ish acoustic acid-folk LPs (in fact I cannot think of one to better it...and I do know my stuff regarding this category of music)...it's VERY much in a Nick Drake vein, also taking in the best parts/attributes of Ralph McTell, Tom Rapp, Al Stewart (first album era), early Tim Buckley, and even odd nods to early Incredible String Band...every single song is a stand-out, really!...packed full of melody, with only acoustic guitar (he has a simply gorgeous melodic finger-picking style!) and occasional flute and harmonica to accompany him...he even has occasional dischordant vocal moments (not a negative thing, by the way), which add a unique lilt to proceedings. The recording is crystal clear as is his vocal delivery (he has a truly wonderful voice - so easy to listen to).
The bottom line is...if you love any of the above-mentioned artists, and the whole acoustic acid-folk scene, please, for your own sake, do NOT miss out on this. It's pure magic.
