This was the first Motown release licensed to Oriole in the UK. It was also the first of three US R&B No.1 hits in the US for Mary Wells and the second song written for her by Smokey Robinson – the previous being ‘The One Who Really Loves You’. With great backing vocals from The Lovetones, Mary’s mellifluous vocal stylings are perfectly suited to Smokey’s sardonic lyrics. It all adds up to a soul classic.
