MATCHING MOLE 1972 UK LP of the classic British Progressive Rock group (CBS) S-64850 M-/M. Ex-Soft Machine drummer & vocalist Robert Wyatt joined by Bill MacCormick (bass), Phil Miller (guitar) & David Sinclair (keyboards). Essential LP for fans of the Canterbury Sound in fantastic condition.
The distinctive, fragile voice of Robert Wyatt is instantly identifiable as the lead singer of the seminal British Progressive Rock band Matching Mole. After 4 albums with the classic Progressive Rock band Soft Machine & a solo LP titled "The End Of An Ear", drummer & singer Wyatt formed his own group Matching Mole. The name of the group was the Anglicization of "Machine Molle"- French for Soft Machine. It was a Canterbury super-group of sorts with David Sinclair of Caravan on keyboards, Phil Miller of Carol Grimes & Delivery on guitar & bassist Bill MacCormick who played with Phil Manzanera in Quiet Sun. In addition to drums & voice, Robert Wyatt provided the occasional mellotron & piano. The LP kicks off with the great "O Caroline"- Wyatt's best performance since the oft-recorded "Memories". The rest of the album takes on a jazzy Prog Rock sound with keyboards, tasteful drumming & vocal sounds that are not actual lyrics but augment the music beautifully. As with the Soft Machine, personnel problems plagued Matching Mole with Sinclair dropping out during the recording of this record to be replaced by New Zealander Dave MacRae. They released one more LP "Little Red Record" but Wyatt's tragic accident which left him a paraplegic put an end to the group in 1973. Matching Mole remains a classic example of the Canterbury Sound highlighted by the surprisingly accessible "O Caroline".

Smooth, non-textured cover is intact w/no writing or tears & looks great w/only a light 1" stain on the bottom left corner as well as an almost non-existent sticker residue mark on the front, upper left but it sill rates a M- grading. The record has orange fading into yellow CBS labels. It has received very few plays & is in MINT condition. These characteristics indicate that it is a 2nd UK pressing from 1972 (1st pressings had a textured cover & solid orange labels). Nevertheless, it is a rare classic Prog Rock record which had no U.S. release.
