Toshioki MATSUMURA
A Visual Brain: 1986-1993(LP)
Choon Scotland
Cat: CHN 002. Rel: 8 Jun 20
Experimental/Electronic
Side 1 - Track 1. Orange Alert Side 1 - Track 2. La Nuit Remue (Photogram Work #1) Side 2 - Track 1. Par Un Tunnel (Photogram Work #2) Side 2 - Track 2. Human Life
Cutting to the chase, this release is likely to act as a gateway drug to the work of Toshioki Matsumara, who - as a member of Tokyo's Visual Brains video-art collective - spent decades recording experimental electronic soundtracks influenced by East, West and Other, each designed to accompany the crew's visual work. Some of those scores have been compiled onto this record, which is a wildly varied and relentlessly intriguing introduction to this highly specialised maestro. While clearly grounded in minimalist traditions, Matsumara manages to paint his sonic pictures in vivid technicolours, whether that's the tropical percussion of 'Orange Alert, chart-worthy synth balladry on 'Par Un Tunnel', or the beautifully and playful piano overture that is 'Human Life'. File under 'Rare', and also 'Ridiculously Imaginative', if your collection has those categories.
