Description
Matthew Sweet / Altered Beast - BMG/Zoo Entertainment Records 72445-11050-1 (US)(1993) ...This auction is for a factory Sealed, original issue Audiophile Record on (US) vinyl. This is a first and only American pressing on the highest quality (HQ-180) virgin vinyl that was limited and quickly out of print.
Matthew Sweet has a great ability in being able to take a weighty list of influences and ingredients and make a good-quality blend of highly charged guitar-based pop. Anybody unfamiliar with his work, with a strong penchant for the electric Neil Young, the Raspberries, Gene Clark, Flamin' Groovies or Todd Rundgren will find this album utterly indispensable.

Album Notes
Personnel: Matthew Sweet (vocals, guitar, 6- & 12-string basses); Ivan Julian (guitar); Greg Leisz (guitar, pedal steel guitar); Byron Berline (fiddle); Ron Pangborn (drums).
Recorded at Sunset Sound Factory, Hollywood, California in January and February, 1993.
Altered Beast is all over the place, both emotionally and musically. Ranging from piercing guitar rave-ups ("Dinosaur Act") to gorgeous country-rock ("Time Capsule"), the album not only covers all sides of Matthew Sweet's musical personality, but pastes them together like only he could. It takes a bit of time for the album to make sense, but after a few listens, it falls together, and its best moments equal anything he's done to date.
Session men include guitarist Richard Lloyd, the brilliant fiddle player Byron Berline and the late Nicky Hopkins on piano. Sweet's work may be exclusively derivative but in the absence of the aforementioned artists, who else is there to carry the torch?
Editorial Reviews
9 - Excellent Plus - ...Glorious in its castigating, howling-in-the-wilderness ardour, BEAST is alive with purgative venom: the sort of record the likes of Dinosaur Jr might be capable of, but couldn't really be bothered to make....

...grudgefulness is a triumphant thing... [ALTERED BEAST] reeks of Neil Young in its subtle vengefulness...It's deft, pretty and melodic....I don't know what Matthew Sweet's got against the world, but I like it...
Melody Maker (19930724)

Recommended - ...a wimp with a will to power....Like everyone's self-proclaimed Roman god, he presents himself as both romantic tyrant and misunderstood innocent....The impeccable tunes are still there for the most part, and so are those scene-stealing guitars...

3 Stars - Good - ...In the lyrics he's the same old Sweet....ALTERED BEAST has its inspiring moments...
