MAX CREEK s/t LP PRIVATE PRESS/GRATEFUL DEAD/MINT/EXTRA
MAX CREEK s/t LP (WRANGER Records)"In the beginning, there was a creek flowing through the land of Max. And it was good. Hence the name Max Creek, a little town nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. When suddenly, out of the darkness, there flew a burnt out kid named John Rider with 174-curly-haired relatives. Carrying his Green-Stamp guitar, a Stromberg-Carlson radio (the first amp) and a suction cup microphone , he followed his stars North. There in Connecticut the fates ordained that he collide with two equally burnt strip-joint musicians , Dave Reed and Bob Gosselin, and formed in Spring 1971 the band that came to be called Max Creek.
The band spent much of that summer in Washington, Mass., performing for friends at the Mapleview Ballroom, and experimenting with their own form of country-rock. That fall, Max came into town, moving to its new home at the Rocking horse, formerly one of the few places in Hartford where different forms of music could be accepted.
Max Creek continued playing around Connecticut, and in the Spring of 1972, picked up then 15 year-old Scott Murawski for occasional guitar accompaniment. Due to obvious legal problems, the band returned to its original 3 members.
In January of 1973, the band finally tricked an old friend, Mark Mercier (from Portland, Maine) into playing Fender Rhodes piano, Max continued as 4 pieces until that summer, when..."
