With a legacy spanning over four decades, originally spawned in 1983 out of spite for being kicked out of Metallica, the revenge plot of Megadeth mastermind Dave Mustaine is a testament to embittered motivation, with his attempt to play catch up to his old bandmates eventually cementing him in the pantheon of the Big 4 of thrash (along with Slayer and Anthrax). While those bygones have long since been laid to rest, the same could never be said for Mustaine's prolific drive which has seen Megadeth continue to churn out albums for their devoted following every few years, while this pointedly decided self-titled 17th full-length serves as their gracious swansong, following on from 2022's The Sick, the Dying... and the Dead! Opting to close his labour of love on his own terms, the record delivers one last run around the sun complete with Mustaine's signature snarling vocals, breakneck paced speed metal galloping riffage and war-obsessed lyricism, highlighted to sterling effect on the ferocious opener 'Tipping Point', while the never-to-cease feud with his older brother band is even offered some closure with the bonus cover of the title-track from Metallica's 1984 sophomore album Ride The Lightning, of which Mustaine helped to originally pen.
