Blues pianist Memphis Slim, harmonica wizard Jazz Gillum, and guitarist Arbee Stidham assembled in a New York City recording studio on January 16, 1961, under the supervision of Nat Hentoff to track an album session for Candid Records. That they did, but what began to emerge was a loose, musical "trialogue" on departed blues artists that the trio had either known or been influenced by, a list that included Big Bill Broonzy, Leroy Carr, Cow Cow Davenport, Curtis Jones, Walter Davis, Roosevelt Sykes, Blind Blake, Washboard Sam, and Big Maceo, each of whom is given a tip of the hat in one song or another. Slim's piano is a bit out of tune throughout the proceedings, as is Stidham's guitar, which makes this less than a perfect recording, but the respect and reverence and wonderfully loose, intimate, and ragged delight these three veteran blues performers bring to these tracks offset the technical defects. Highlights include a sparkling and upbeat version of Cow Cow Davenport's "Cow Cow Blues," a crisp take on Roosevelt Sykes' "Forty-Four Blues," and a vigorous tip of the hat to Blind Blake on "Diggin' My Potatoes." The end result isn't a perfect album, mostly due to the tuning problems, but it has a very real intimacy to it, and it unwinds like an easy musical reminiscence between three old friends. This tribute from Slim, Jazz, and Arbee may not be essential, but it sure is honest, and true to the name of the record label, it is indeed candid. There's something to be said for that.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          The album is believed to come with the original Candid mail order form

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

COVER IS STILL SEALED IN ITS LOOSE-FITTING PLASTIC BAGGY (TYPICALLY USED FOR SEALING RECORDS IN THE LATE '50s AND EARLY '60s); HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT MINT OR NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS EXCELLENT OR VG++

(PLEASE NOTE: THE PERFORATED PLASTIC BAGGY HAS SEPARATED ALONG ABOUT 70% OF THE PERFORATION, BUT THE ALBUM IS STILL VISIBLY SEALED)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        A faint water stain affects the area about 7 square inches in size  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)  in one corner; there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible and has caused some discoloration, and a slight warp in the affected area  (ALSO VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).
