I have a mint copy of a Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs unreleased UHQR test pressing of Styx The Grand Illusion. I am the second owner and played it once on a high-end SME turntable with Graham tonearm and Audioquest cartridge. It plays at least mint minus and there are no spindle marks. I am not sure how many know that MFSL made test pressings of records that they never released. In 1981 Mobile Fidelity and JVC invented the Ortofon record cutting process and went back and remastered a number of their regular MFSL half-speed records. They pressed them on 200 grams of JVC Super Vinyl and froze the stamper between pressings, resulting in a flatter record with better channel separation and detail. Probably because MFSL only released UHQR titles they had previously released as regular MFSL pressings, and because they priced them at $50 each, they only ended up releasing 8 UHQR titles. The rest, including The Grand Illusion, remain only as test pressings, of which there are undoubtedly only a few existing, including this title. I thought it sounded better than the regular MFSL version of The Grand Illusion, but you, like me, probably won't play it, preferring it for its collectability. As you can see from the picture, it has a white label, MFSL-1-026-A10 and -B9 matrix lettering in the dead wax, and comes in a white jacket with MFSL-1-026 stamped on the jacket. BTW, the reflection on the record is just that, a reflection of an overhead light. It also has a white MFSL-type rice paper inner sleeve.
