A BIT OF INFO FROM THE WEB !

Seemingly forgotten for so many years by all but a few, the rich vein of British jazz from the 1960s is now beginning to be unlocked, when the likes of Garrick, Mike Westbrook, John Surman and Graham Collier were beginning to lock horns with a musical world about to break free from American dominance. With the influx of colonial émigrés, such as Joe Harriott, Mike Gibbs and Chris MacGregor, London became a musical melee, a jazz jambouree where Coleman's mustard mixed with exotic Commonwealth spices. There was still no commercial security unless musical horizons were broadened: Mike Gibbs moved in to TV, Ian Carr and others were to move more in to the Old Grey Whistle Test mainstream of the 1970s; but an impoverished and desultory infrastructure held sway around record labels like Deram and Argo, producers such as Denis Preston and Pete Eden, and supportive London venues such as the Old Place and the Little Theatre Club.

The demise of this scene was perhaps bought about by the incursions of pop. The Beatles had taken the simplicity of the original rock'n'roll shouters on to a sophisticated and technically enhanced level, a space quickly filled by more socially and artistically astute acts such as the Pink Floyd, whose like cut like a scythe through London's musical venues. And yet in reality this scene did not collapse. Titbits thrown by broadcasters and cottage-industry recording labels helped keep the flame alive; self-help eventually became the order of the day (Garrick's own recording label was started in 1993).
