Here's a real standout 7" from the EARLIEST days of British 'freakbeat' psychedelia; 'AM I THE RED ONE' from the wonderfully strange MICK SOFTLEY with THE SUMMER SUNS as released on DEMO issue in 1966. The flip 'THAT'S NOT MY KIND OF LOVE' exhibits more of his odd vocal approach - but the 'A' is the one everyone talks about as it features bizarre echoed harmonies and effects to match the weird manic lyrics. I can listen to this 100 times more and still be just as bemused as to what he's singing about.... but then that was the sixties for you! As usual, I do not agree with the 'Tapestry of Delights' assertations that he's a "Dylan soundalike" (and wonder if Vernon Joynson really listened to most of the records he's reviewed??) On the DEMO A-LABLE original 45 CBS RECORDS 202469, this was not in any way a hit, and you could probably count the number of commercially sold copies on your hand - and this would have been poked away by a reviewer or DJ and probably never to poke out again until I got hold of it! This would NOT have been off his ultra-rare 'Songs For Swingin' Survivors' Columbia LP that is on everyone's want lists, and it's the hardest to find of his CBS singles - I haven't seen another advertised personally, so I can't imagine when the chance to get another copy will ever come up. Condition-wise the surface does show some storage-scuff under a bright lamp, superficial and light, and this will grade EX- due to that. It plays practically as new, and the sound is all loud and clear music - the aggressive guitarwork is bright, and the bass and drums undistorted. Strange and wonderful!
