Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple of light and faint spindle marks on side two and barely a trace on the other. A very elusive Dawn album, clearly hardly played.

Cat Number: DNLS 3005.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 175 grams. An astonishing weight for a standard album. Anything over 150 grams is fairly exceptional, ones over 160 grams unusual and noteworthy. Over 170 grams and over, rare and unusual. The irony is, when the orange Dawn labels changed, they became very thin and flimsy lightweight pressings in most cases. Records of this weight into the 1970s and beyond were rarely made until the modern ‘audiophile’ specialist pressings.

Brief Info: A gifted guitarist and songwriter, this his first on Dawn records. A man that can be compared in style to Michael Chapman and Roy Harper and fans of those will sure to enjoy this too. A beautiful copy owned from new by one male purchaser. Hardly played and offering superb, very clean sound, never to be taken for granted on this label. An inconsistent label, this off-shoot were initially on the orange format. So this title not available long before being changed. As soon as you hold this record, you will know it’s a little different from the rest, and few standard records were ever pressed to this incredible weight. My LP12 took an extra second to even get up to speed, 175 grams is a massive weight for a vinyl record. For fans of quality guitar, slide guitar and songs, Mike Cooper delivers and this is possibly his best known album.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and given the format and what has been inside for over 40 years, worthy of better still I feel. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. This early original example has a wide style spine. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents Pending’ text inside. This rests on the very edge of the bottom fold but is still visible

Cover Front: This is clearly very prone to wear and the lack of it is very commendable for general good storage over the years. The main thing is the original price sticker near the top right corner. It appears sold by ‘Hat Records’ or something similar, the text is clipped on the sticker that has a vintage 0181 telephone number prefix. This has a fairly hefty £6.00 asking price way back then. Clearly the one owner decided to leave this alone, and probably wise to do so on a cover like this. We have all seen the results of removing vintage price stickers that were more reluctant to lose their grip on matt covers, and I for one would no risk it’s removal. It can be said to be part of it’s history anyway. The front shows little rubbing or creasing with rich colour retained. It will certainly not be easy to find a great deal better.

Cover Back: The first thing most worthy of mention is the lack of ringwear on a back like this. With such a massive thick record inside all these years, quite how it has avoided it, I am not sure. This is pretty much the same as the front and the more I look at this cover, the more I think I have been a little too cautious with my grading.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little short of as made with any blemishes minuscule.

Top Edges: Both almost like new, straight and unworn.

Bottom Edges: One small chip and a couple of fine and faint rub traces. Impressive for dark storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and no trimming. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Superb: and that’s not putting too finer a point on a very dark wide spine. Solid, straight with no compression, creasing or crushing. This is folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. This has barely any hints of wear and even the folds retain most-all ink. Still fully erect and robust as when first made – try finding another one better. All text is perfect and unworn and there are NO tip-ins at all.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small and light, very little to the spine at all. All retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. All the facts made all the more perilous by the sheer weight of the record inside. The only issue for the highly discerning is the price sticker, it does seem very firmly adhered which for one being attached for over 40 years is hardly a surprise. Still attractive, it should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a quite heavy-duty plain white inner that is polylined. This being ultra clear as seen through two crisp and sharp window circles. Two neat and quite light corner creases and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and massively pressed as mentioned above. A copy hardly played or run-in in vinyl terms on all the evidence with any surface marks tiny, few and ultra faint – barely anything at all actually, even when viewed critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This massively pressed record plays up to it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Almost at the end of side one, there are several seconds of complete silence before a short vocal sound comes back. This silent area plays just as it should, nigh-on silent, I actually thought the record had ended. This being my first ever copy of this record, I was unfamiliar. Few copies will match or outperform this monolithic pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. One of the cleanest pressed Dawn records I have yet heard, and the material does have some quiet moments, so that is great news for the more discerning collector and listener. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
