Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. As seen, this is a deep red translucent pressing – this means light can pass through it, but cannot be seen through. When seen normally, this still appears as a black record, but when held against a bright light bulb, the eerie red glow is seen as I hope my picture demonstrates.

Brief Info: The third Mike Cooper album for Pye subsidiary label Dawn, this credited with The Machine Gun Co and Michael Gibbs. One of his finest albums, a top singer-songwriter in the blues-folk style. This one appears very little played, that always the best news, but, as so often, there are a small few sporadic pressing sounds, mostly one-off, which is all too common on this variable label. Dawn was a subsidiary of Pye that specialised mostly in lesser-selling acts, most sold poorly and not seen often. This does not include the insert sheet, but does have a very impressive cover, and these types rarely wear well. So a nice example if a few small sporadic sound blemishes are acceptable. I have found over time, if any smaller selling record has pressing glitches, many, if not most others will be similar, this record for its majority plays clean and impressively, and musically, its great.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A single rough textured format with matt surfaces. Printed and made in England, includes the polylined white inner, but no insert.

Cover Front & Back: Plain in terms of lack of graphics, but such covers are very difficult to find in better condition. The surfaces are roughly textured, meaning the red text matter seldom escapes being eroded, this has been totally avoided on the front and back surfaces. Any hint of discolouration or toning – another trait these types rarely avoid – is minimal and very light, any traces near the edges and almost as light as it’s likely to get. No creasing or rubbing, this will seldom be found better on the main areas.

Top Edge: Straight, with any rub traces very little and faint.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same, just light surface rubbing towards the right corner area.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with minimal hint of wear. Any thickening or burring conspicuous by its absence, even viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with a little light compression here-and-there. The perilous text is mostly intact and strong, a little gentle clipping to the artists name.

Corners: Any tip rubs are small and light, very fine to excellent shape with no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: Sparse graphically, but quite a unique cover in a fairly bland kind of way, for sure they are not seen often in this splendid condition. Indeed it could prove an upgrade for some and should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(+): a typical heavy-duty plain white inner used on the early Dawn records. This has darkened with age and one edge has thinned, but remains largely intact. Minimal creasing and two crisp window circles with a clear polylining.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed on deep red translucent vinyl – this only apparent when held to a very bright light source e.g. a light bulb is best. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This musically impressive album plays largely plays up to, and even beyond its visual grading. But as stated further up, it does have a few sporadic, mostly one-off pressing sounds, far from untypical for this label were pressing quality was something of a lottery. There is scant visual evidence of any issues, this is a lovely clean record that appears hardly played. This is why I play all my records to seek out any invisible pressing or tracking flaws, this one tracks perfectly*. Offering strong, largely clean sound – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. But with a few sporadic blemishes, pressing ‘burps’ or ‘rasps’ – call them what you will – most collectors will know what I mean – this is not for sound purists who want perfect at any cost. Little else apart from the odd sporadic sound apart, spoilt the listening experience for a scarce record, this the first original I have had, so have had not other to compare it to. But I suspect most will have similar blemishes.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
