The MIKE STUART SPAN
" YOU CAN UNDERSTAND ME "
Original Single-sided ACETATE 45 on the EMIDISC RECORDINGS Blank lable cat# 'Aug 2' (Probably the date of recording, it's barely visible on the lable) Vintage 7"!
A historic piece from a great and highly regarded psych band;
The 'MIKE STEWART' SPAN is how this seems to have been mistakenly labled, and with the erased writings on the lable I suggest there had been other doubts.
This was probably submitted by their manager (who was basically a shop owner in Brighton trying his luck in the pop music market!) to Fontana Records who took on the band for the one release.
It could also have been 'persuaded' onto the group for an attempt at a hit 45, as their own material wasn't finding any success. They did get onto a date opening for Scott Walker and The Herd, so perhaps this was part of the deal!
Footage exists of them performing and chatting, called "A Day In The Life Of A Band".
Just around this period they recorded their fantastic psych single on Jewel Records, which of course sank without a trace but gained them continued respect.
They took up again with their intentions when Elektra signed them (Joe Boyd being considerably better at spotting good quality musicians), and recorded 3 of the best Prog-Psych singles of the time before calling it a day.
The top side of this acetate test/demo copy has Columbia's (EMI's) 'Emidisc' recording blank lable stuck on one side only.
The disc is in VG++ condition, a decent playing and very well preserved copy.
The Emidisc label is on the one side, and it's VG+, having been erased at some point.
Don't miss this rare copy of a VERY scarce issue!
