Description
On offer is the self-titled 1977 LP by MIKE WATERSON on TOPIC, catalogue number 12TS332. The only solo album by Mike Waterson of the famed singing family, the Watersons, this is a gem of a cappella singing, solo and group - on four of the twelve songs, Mike is joined by sisters Lal and Norma, niece Maria and Jim Eldon, with Rod Stradling augmenting the company on two of these. The joys include a sprightly ‘Light Dragoon’, with the Watersons in full flow, a ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’ adapted for Hull trawlermen (‘Bye Bye, Skipper’) and an incredible ‘Tamlyn’, the centrepiece of side two, the fullest and most compelling account of the fairy ballad I’ve yet heard. A great memorial to the much-missed Mike Waterson, who died in June 2011.
This vinyl is PRISTINE, with still shiny grooves, no scratches, no scuffmarks, no pops, no sticking and no background noise. MINT, and very likely unplayed (this was one which Ian Chappell, see below, had duplicate copies of). The labels are clean, with no writing, and no spindle marks. The sleeve is in MINT condition, without blemish. What do we say in the trade? The ultimate up-grade copy, to all intent and purposes brand spanking new.
The album comes from the collection of the late Ian Chappell, director of the Hampshire-based South Eastern Museums Service. A devoted collector of folk music, Chappell would obsessively buy multiple copies of the same record in search of vinyl perfection. They were acquired by the seller at auction from Omega Auctions of Stockport in June 2012.
To be shipped in the STRONGEST 625 MICRON BEST 12” BROWN BOARD MAILER COMPLETE WITH 2 STIFFENERS and high-grade plastic sleeve.
