THIS IS OUR LAST COPY FOREVER - 8 TITLES 146 SIDES OF RARE VINYL
Only 1,000 copies of each record ON THE FIRST 6 TITLES LISTED. Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman re-mastered ALL THE 1ST 7 TITLES LISTED. Everyone involved in this project went to extensive lengths of painstaking detail to ensure that these editions will be the best-sounding-and-looking versions ever.
Here's How it was done:
Using only the original analog master tapes, the renowned team of Steve Hoffman & Kevin Gray remastered and cut all of the titles at AcousTech Mastering, which features a pure Class-A disc-cutting system. AcousTech is located at Record Technology, Inc. the plant where the vinyl was pressed. It is a tremendous sonic advantage to have the pressing plant plating department & mastering room in the same facility as Steve & Kevin could cut a lacquer and plated immediately. This prevents the degradation of the grooves in a lacquer which is very fragile to quick deterioration.
And of course cutting at 45 speed is the audiophile choice for the highes quality. A 45-RPM record is sonically superior to a 33 1/3 variety because of a 35 percent reduction of groove curvature compared to a 33 1/3 cut.. It means that while you can't fit as much music into a 45, the undukations of the groove that your cartridge has to track are stretched over a longer distance. For these reissues, the music was displaced onto four sides, meaning each side contains about 10 minutes of music.
This is the ultimate reissues. The only way you'll get closer to this classic music is to listen to the master tapes or have been in the studio with the artist originally during the actual session.
WORKIN WITH MILES DAVIS -
Undeniably one of the best small bands in the history of jazz, the Miles Davis quintet of the mid-1950s made history at the Cafe Bohemia on Manhattan's Barrow Street and in the New Jersey studio of Rudy Van Gelder for Prestige. This is the 3rd in a series of four LPs taped in two marathon studio sessions, done in the style of sets at the Bohemia, producing music of high energy and immediacy. This is a mix of standards and originals, up-tempos and ballads, and a trio number, "Ahmad's Blues." Miles is the sole survivor of this quintet but the music made in the mid-50's period will live forever. The excitement of the emerging John Coltrane; the informed, melodic swing of Red Garland; the tremendous snap and pop of the rhythm trio of Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, and Miles' poignancy and intense swing. Recording engineered by Rudy Van Gelder. Track Listings 1. It Never Entered My Mind 2. Four 3. In Your Own Sweet Way 4. The Theme (take 1) 5. Trane's Blues 6. Ahmad's Blues 7. Half Nelson 8. The Theme (take 2)MILES DAVIS MODERN JAZZ GIANTS - 45 Speed – 2 Sealed LP Set –
Here are four tunes from one of the classic sessions of all time when a combination of giants gathered in Rudy Van Gelder's studio for a historic meeting on Christmas Eve afternoon, 1954. With Thelonious Monk and three-quarters of the Modern Jazz Quartet (Jackson, Heath and Clarke) as his accomplices, Miles blends sophisticated harmonic knowledge with raw, spontaneous invention to produce extraordinary music. The two takes of "The Man I Love" are quite different within their basic similarity. Track Listings 1. The Man I Love 2. Swing Spring 3. 'Round About Midnight 4. Bemsha Swing 5. The Man I Love (take 1)MILES DAVIS ALL STARS WALKIN
45 Speed – 2 Sealed LP Set –
This title contains two of the classic Miles Davis sessions of 1954 which made all the critics who hailed his appearance at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival a "comeback" seem like a pack of Rip Van Winkles."Walkin'" and "Blue 'n' Boogie" are quintessential blues jams. The solos by Davis, J.J. Johnson, Lucky Thompson and Horace Silver are electric and the ensemble punches powerfully. The date with Bird-fancier Davey Schildkraut finds Miles' magic mute materializing in front of the fine Silver/Percy Heath/Kenny Clarke rhythm section. Track Listings 1. Walkin' 2. Blue 'N Boogie 3. Solar 4. You Don't Know What Love Is
THE NEW MILES DAVIS QUINTET - MONO
This is the first LP to be issued featuring the Miles Davis Quintet — a group that was to become one of the most influential small bands of the Fifties. It also introduced John Coltrane to the jazz public, launching him on his significant career. Davis’ singular mastery with a mute, exemplified on The Musings of Miles, is further emphasized, as is Red Garland’s penchant for picking “new” old standards for Miles.Mastered by Kevin Gray. Track Listings 1. Just Squeeze Me 2. There Is No Greater Love 3. How Am I To Know? 4. S''posin 5. The Theme 6. Stablemates
THE MUSINGS OF MILES DAVIS - This was a forerunner of the Miles Davis Quintet as it was his first session with Red Garland and Philly Joe Jones. Up to then, his Prestige dates had been of the "all star" variety. By the fall, John Coltrane and Paul Chambers would come aboard to help form the first of a continuum of great Davis working groups.
Track Listings 1. Will You Still Be Mine? 2. I See Your Face Before Me 3. I Didn't 4. A Gal in Calico 5. A Night in Tunisia 6. Green HazeSTEAMIN' - THIS TITLE ALONE SELLS FOR $500 IF YOU CAN FIND ONE OF THESE ORIGINAL NUMBERED PRESSINGS is the last of the classic albums Prestige Records released from various sessions trumpeter Miles Davis recorded between November 1955 and October 1956 with his historic "first" quintet, including tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Together with Cookin' (also available in an audiophile format), Relaxin' (also available in an audiophile format), and Workin' (also available in an audiophile format), STEAMIN' completes a series of memorable recordings masterfully engineered by Rudy Van Gelder that remains a definitive manifesto from the hard-bop era.
One dynamic that gave this quintet its distinctive edge is the contrast between Davis's introspective playing on ballads ("When I Fall In Love," "Something I Dreamed Last Night") and Coltrane's hard-blowing passion ("Salt Peanuts," "Well You Needn't"). Another is the interplay between Garland, Chambers, and Jones, who are not only consummate accompanists, but all-star soloists as well. The version of "Surrey with the Fringe on Top" here is a quintessential performance by this remarkable quintet.
