Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple of ultra light, fine and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. Deep, rich colour with any handling traces to the dark matt surfaces tiny and faint, these will prove immensely difficult to find better.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. A very good weight for any record.

Rarity: Scarce: jazz records never sold in the numbers of mainstream acts and were always more of a specialist market.

Original Year of Release: Recorded in 1949 and 1950, first issued as an eight track 10 inch record. in 1954. This 11 track version issued in the mid-60s going by the inner sleeve.

Brief Info: Described as ‘Incontestable Masterpieces’ and recognised by jazz connoissseurs as one of the greatest sessions ever. These were recorded over three days between January 1949 to March 1950 with a young Miles Davis as leader. Prior to this he was playing in Charlie Parker's quintet, replacing Dizzy Gillespie. It invented a new genre within jazz, being ‘Cool Jazz’ and this record encaptures those sessions superbly on a hardly played disc. Pay little attention to the vintage of these sessions, as the sound quality is fantastic. As the cover states “universally regarded as among the finest jazz productions of all time”. This is a superb mid-60s mono pressing that does is maximum justice.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate, this wraps around the closed edges and ends on three rear external flipbacks. The main back panel is unprotected and matt finished. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents pending’ text. Includes the EMI promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: A lovely front with laminate that retains superb shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and barely any traces of dulling, even with angled viewing. A few edge creases, mainly on the spine that few of these vintage covers escape as a bare minimum, just one tiny half moon away from the sides that hardly even shows. The graphic is intensely black and striking to view, this will not be easy to find much better.

Cover Back: The unprotected white back as can be clearly seen, is still just that, not yellowed, grubby or toned, this has aged little at all. Any marks are tiny and faint, no creases and any hint of rim impression minimal. All the flipbacks are in superb condition with no lifting, damage and any of the tiny few surface creases ultra fine and faint as well. The ends neat with barely any traces of burring and no scuffs or tears, all incredibly clean with no grime line formation. These are seldom seen a great deal better.

Top Edge: Practically as made being dead straight and smooth.

Bottom Edge: Pretty much as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with minimal wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A super spine too: solid, straight with hardly any hint of compression – the ends are deeply pinched in manufacture and both these tapered areas are crisp and very neat. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All four are sharp and neat with any tip rubs very small, most on the bottom right with just the odd tiny tip crease that again few will ever avoid.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic mid-60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and little short of as made. Barely any real wear at all with barely any creasing– a faint semi one on one corner only – and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This being a black and white unlined EMI promotional inner that advertises albums up to around 1966 that gives clear vintage to the record inside.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(+): and this being very critical. Side one has a long very fine hairline surface mark that has NO sound, anything else are ultra faint surface marks and traces seen only with scrutiny under bright angled light and without doubt, this superb fresh looking mono record has hardly been played and avoided any abuse or damage from any mono record player of the time. Very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed and visually a super record that should please most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Essential jazz listening – this top quality EMI pressed Capitol record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – this totally defies it’s vintage of when recorded, but jazz fans will know these classics were years ahead of their time. Any surface sound barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early-pressed example. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
