Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle marks very few and fine. The fine blemish at the 4 o’clock position of side two is within manufacture. Another typical piece from the same owner as the ‘Bitches Brew’ I am currently offering (amongst others). He was a worker in the vinyl pressing factory for a number of years and obtained some lovely early pressings, most of which have hardly been played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: For many, the greatest jazzman ever. Recorded in mid-1967 by Davis’ second quintet, it was the third of five albums this line-up made. The final song with other musicians was the first recording to include Shorter and dates back to 1962. A first stereo issue in superb condition, and another impressive piece from a fine collection of CBS Mile Davis records with more to follow. Strongly recommended for fans of this legendary jazz trumpeter. The lady on the front cover is actress Cicely Tyson, the future wife of Davis.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate. This covers all the closed edges including spine, that not always the case, but the best news for resisting wear on this delicate area. The back is matt and smooth and includes the large red ‘STEREO’ stamp as seen in close-up. This probably hand-stamped as you can feel a distinct edge when felt with the fingertip. Issued still in the era of the mono record, CBS decided a specialist printed stereo cover was cheaper to produce this way – these are not seen often. Printed and made in England by the Upton Printing Group and includes the original orange promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination & Front: Superb artwork of the future Mrs Davis and this will rarely be seen better with an original record inside. The laminate retains strong shine, freshness and clarity. No lifting or peeling and practically devoid of any creasing, this has hardly aged at all. Under angled light, gentle rim dull traces but little else, and how many covers of this amazing age will avoid that as a bare minimum?

Cover Back: The unprotected back has gently aged with very gentle toning around the edges, but the surface has barely any real wear. So just the merest hint to politely remind of it’s considerable age and vintage, and personally, I have no issues with that. No ringwear or rubbing and again, barely any creasing. The laminate end on the right edge is neat with barely any traces of grubbiness and the stamped red STEREO indicator looks fantastic. These are not seen often, in most cases where only mono covers were initially made, most had stickers with the stamped versions far more in the minority.

Top Edge: Barely any wear and still smooth unscuffed laminate. Any bowling minimal as laminate tightens over time, this is still mainly straight.

Bottom Edge: Similar again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with practically no wear. Any thickening or burring minuscule even as seen viewed end-on. The front edge correctly has the fine non-laminate strip, this devoid of grubbiness and wear. Record enters on this edge that has no trimming or enhancements.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with possible fairly light compression, but very neatly and consistently so. The ends are definitely deeply pinched in manufacture for over an inch, that is more unusual to see. These finer ends are both very crisp and neat indeed. As stated above, this spine is fully laminated and all FULLY intact and super-smooth with no scuffs or wear. All text pristine.

Corners: All retain excellent to near mint shape with any tip rubs tiny and hardly even worthy of mention.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this magnificent 1960s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. As stated, only mere hints to remind of the significant age with slight back edge toning, but many think that actually adds to the real history and feel of vintage covers. This scarce item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and harshly graded as such. Only marked down for darkening of the back which, in most cases, is purely natural. Still clean and the front especially, fresh and devoid of creasing and edge splits (with no repairs). Both window circles crisp and totally undamaged. This famous inner promotes CBS records to 1967, so puts a correct date-time for the record itself. The previous album ‘Miles Smiles’ (also on offer) is seen. When the record is placed inside, these inners always look so attractive as seen in my pictures – but best store the disc inside the modern lined inner I always supply with my records.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface blemishes minimal as seen critically under bright angled light. Very gentle friction traces only with barely any ‘needle’ marks. In real terms, this first issue record is little short of as-made, any minor dulling spots simply within the pressing and with little audio affect. This rough-label original plays superbly. Visually a lovely record that appears hardly even played, it should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality jazz-fusion album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, gentle traces on the odd very quiet passage here and there, but overall and very early pressing and nothing lacking in the full-on presentation of the acoustic music. The odd tick or polite reminder of the media being played is near impossible to avoid as these albums will have quiet passages and records into their 48th year rarely will play ‘CD-quiet’. Few early examples will outperform this pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, the music fully focused and crisp. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been very well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – it will take an amazing copy to better this significantly. It will prove very difficult to find one better, unless absolute silence is mandatory throughout, this splendid copy merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
