Quiet Nights was the fourth and last record where Miles gave the arrangements and orchestrations in the hands of Gil Evans. Miles' producer, Teo Macero, released the album before the maestro found it ready for release.

Obviously, the success of their last collaboration, Sketches of Spain convinced them to have another go at it. This time, however, it took them three years before the record was finished to be released. By that time, the world had changed more than a bit: Cool Jazz was ebbing away, The Beatles had begun to turn popular music upside down creating Pop Music as we know it today, and the American president had just been assassinated. And although Miles may have been the first US-American musician to decide to record that new wave from Brazil, Bossa Nova, in the USA, by the time Quiet Nights was finally released, Stan Getz had already enjoyed his first hit with Desafinado, a Bossa Nova song, (on Jazz Samba). So, Miles lost out on the novelty effect.

The music on Quiet Nights is illustrated by its title. It's quiet, nocturnal music. There isn't a fast song. The songs are all treated with those elaborate arrangements by Gil Evans (with the exception of Summer Nights). Naturally, everybody compared Quiet Nights with Sketches of Spain and found the earlier record more exciting. That criticism had some element of truth. There were signs of wear. Those who expected constant revolution from Miles were likely to be disappointed.

Gil Evans' arrangements are quite beautiful, nonetheless, the mood is romantic, and Miles plays his horn to melt away.

The last track, Summer Nights is a hint at the upcoming album, Seven Steps to Heaven. It's without the Evans treatment and it captures Victor Feldman, Frank Butler, and Ron Carter, who would stay and become a member of the legendary second Miles Davis Quintet. Summer Nights is yet another ballad and so, it hardly stands out. But it's one of Miles' most beautiful ballads.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-        Cover has two corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
