Description

PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question.   OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. Because of that dedication, there should be no need to open a resolution dispute before working with us.  Please keep in mind, we would prefer to continue to provide you the opportunity to acquire the rare music we present each and every week.   Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable.  We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our well over 18,000 positive feedback.   We use an ultrasonic KLAudio machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery.   We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! We have served thousands of satisfied customers - far more than our feedback records indicate - and our aim is to continue to do so. Thank you for your interest and support.   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SHIPPING:   USA ~ 1 LP = $4.00 Media Priority rates vary by area; please inquire.   All Canadian and Overseas shipping ~ Please inquire about rates. .........................................................................................................................

"First Utterance" is an album you may end up rarely listening to except for special occasions - and for good reason. It's pagan intensity and fixation with dark subjects can seem ghoulish and absurd at times; however, whenever you do put this album on, it's an event, a trip to a cold mountaintop' a sacrifice.

And it is a sacrifice well worth the time. "First Utterance: by COMUS is epic and ferocious, burning kind of fury with the peak of which is rarely reached by even the most misanthropic of underground bands, but also rewards a gentle feeling type of sound. While the use of violence isn't necessarily something you may tend to gravitate towards, "First Utterance"  has a strange poignancy here. Something about the dark events that occur' rape, horrific acts of violence, martyrdom, and losing one's sanity' make those serene moments ever-gripping. The lonely violin solo in 'The Herald' is reminiscent of a passage in Elie Weisel's harrowing holocaust tome 'Night' in which one of the characters, after having run with a group of other prisoners in the snow to the next concentration camp, plays his violin solemnly in a mass of dead and dying prisoners' he eventually breaths his last with his violin in hand.

This contrast is what makes this album great. Comus taps the wild and tranquil sides of folk music. Guitarist/vocalist Roger Wootten howls and yells like a viscous animal, while soprano Bobbie Watson lullubies like a virginal siren. Instrument technique and recording quality is rough and untamed, but the songs are expertly arranged and performed in such a way that I couldn't imagine any other band playing these songs.

From the swampy upward trudge of 'Diana,' to the savage insanity of 'The Prisoner,' First Utterance is a violent, dark, and strange, but ultimately poignant journey through pagan folk music.

Also, for those interested, the rare B-sides of this alternate TWO-LP album are also fantastic and definitely worth checking out

Overall, highest rating by many - this is considered a real masterpiece , a gem , a diamond , an enormous find. Originally recorded in 1971, the LP is one of the most accomplished prog-folk album ever. There are two singers , the female having a rather standard folk rock voice such as Celia Humphries (the Trees) or Jacqui McShee (Pentangle) and the male sounding like some kind of Roger Chapman of Family on acid. The lyrics are demonic (not satanic) and the poetry is as good as Gabriel or Tull's Tramp or Hastings but in a very dark way - but would not classify as gothic either. The music is very acoustical - one might say folkish without sounding celtic or rural music. Somehow the music escapes a real description unless by comparing it to "Trespass" (Genesis) or either "Trees" album -- or maybe also Spirogyra's debut album "St Radiguns."

The lyrics are in a sharp contrast to this pastoral feel and this is what makes it fabulous . "Drip Drip" and "The Herald" are pure heavenly chills down the listeners spine, yelling for murder curses and other joyful Christian things.

Stupendous and flabbergasting how this did not become huge back then, even with the no-commercial appeal sound, but understand that there was a sheer quantity of quality records coming out in the early '70s - and some disappeared without a trace -- as it is the case with this one.

Anyway, if you must discover one album this year , maybe make it this one

Drip Drip (10:54)

Song To Comus (7:30)
