PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Original... 1973 DOUBLE LP, housed in thick gatefold cover and silver-foil customized Quicksilver logo... this was the ultimate overview of the band. All 4 sides are entertaining and serve as the only album one would essentially need by this cornerstone group of the San Francisco psychedelic scene.
Indeed QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE were part of the Haight Asbury triumvirate that included The Grateful Dead, and he Jefferson Airplane. While certainly the lesser known of the three, they were no less important to the development of that musical scene and this collection really does a nice job of catching the essence of the group. The best known tunes, "Fresh Air" and "What About Me" were FM rock staples back in the day, and they hold up really well. Quicksilver had the extended jam in common with their Grateful Dead brethren, and you get plenty of that on the excellent "Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder", and "The Fool". You can also hear the Airplane kinship on the rather stoned "The Bear". This band was one of the first on the San Francisco scene, so there's a lot of maturation to be heard from the early "garage band" psychedelia, to the more sophisticated music they were recording at the end. If you are into late 60's music at all, here's a solid 4-sides and one to own.
The lengthy double set starts with a trio of tracks from their famous first LP. The highly infectious and bright west-coast psych-rock of “Pride of Man” followed by “Dino’s Song” both feature Freiberg and Duncan sharing lead vocals amid John Cipollina quivering guitar glissando's that’d earn him respect among his peers and an iconic status among the fans. Elsewhere follows the Eastern and Iberian inflected, long acid-drenched “The Fool” featuring trippy and warbling Cippolina guitar nirvana mixed in with Freiberg displaying his multi-instrumentalist skills, doubling on viola and keyboards as well as bass ...but it's those gorgeous guitar tapestries and chiming 12 strings arpeggios that are the key domination of this 12 minute length terrific epic.
Further ahead is the wacky and fun “Bears” and then “Mona” - the extended jams featuring 2nd guitarist & vocalist Gary Duncan on a Jim Morrison header with the band bent on a Doors and the Dead trip. Quicksilver history follows the changing line-up where Gary Duncan departed and Nicky Hopkins joins elevating the groups sound to a new level - presented here by the almost 10 minutes long “Edward The Mads Shirt Grinder” adventures with a psych twist of “Three or Four Feet…” dominated by guitarist Cippolina on lead vocals;
Dino Valenti shows up here...to the band he had inspired but never recorded with because of a drug bust & jail time. 1970’s "What About Me" is the long version and documented by Dino's impassioned vocals, ringing keys and magnetized guitar. The best of the entrenched Arab-Iberian tendencies of yore, with both scale modulations and Mediterranean ornamentation passages... Bolero inflection, delicate piano and 12-strings guitar resplendence, topped by eerie lead guitar that flies by like chirping birds against the sunset…
“What About me” was a 1971 album documented by the classical inflected “Spindrifter” a contra punctual symph-rock keyboard piece by Hopkins, followed by the twin bottleneck slide developments between guitarists Cipollina and Duncan on the swampy blues-rock “Local Color.” Yet another highlight is the Latin Santana-tinged flute-led swirls amid full punctuated backing on a “What About Me” with entangled backing spice, Jose Rico Reyes on conga and introducing Hopkins replacement Mark Naftalin on keys.
Later in 1971 saw the departure of both Cipollina and Freiberg (who were replaced by bassist Mark Ryan, while Gary Dumcan manned all guitar parts) represented by the final four tracks; two with Valenti at the helm, the waltzy “Don’t Cry My Lady Love” flowing with C.S.& N. like pristine vocal harmonies...a reflection to traditional West-Coast esthetics with Duncan filling Cippolina's shoes on “Hope” ...“Fire Brothers” features developing acoustic guitar/piano Duncan and Naftalin in an eerie, phantasmagoric and haunting mood.
Every incarnation of the Quicksilver had at least two functionally ready lead singers, and Duncan’s “ I Found Love” a psyched rock-blues catchy tune that highlights the ‘love, love, love’ mantra...
