A few years back, I bough the entire collections of the first two (and longest running) editors of what was probably the best Aussie music mag of its time, RAM. They included almost every record (released between 1975 and 1986) that fell into any of the so-called 'popular music' categories, plus almost all the major label new wave/alternative LP's and 7"s that were released in Australia. Amongst them all were a multitude of promotional releases - the majority of which were stored away and NEVER played! 

Anyway, this record below is one of that collection:

Description:

Extremely rare Mi-Sex invitation record, advertising the launch of their CBS LP "Space Race".

This 45 was sent to select music industry folk as the official and only invite to the band's

exclusive gig at the legendary Sydney venue, The Musicians Club, in Chalmers St., Surry Hills, on 21st May 1980. Effectively, this 45 was the actual ticket and had to be shown at the door of the venue to gain admittance - it states on the label: "Single Ticket Only".

The record begins with the whooshing electronic sound of what one can only assume would be an incoming spaceship, then rips straight into some instrumental Mi-Sex music. This goes for exactly a minute, and over this one-minute's worth of instrumental bit you have Robin Williams as Mork (of Mork and Mindy) and Orson talking about the album/gig/etc. Then it goes into about two minutes of the song "Space Race", followed by Mork delivering more info about the gig.

Some of the first part of the transcript goes along the lines of:

MORK)  Mork calling Orson! Mork calling Orson! Come in lazer breath!

ORSON)   What do you want this time, Mork?

MORK)   I want to tell you about the space race here on Earth.

ORSON) Oh the space race, you mean NASA and rocket trips to the moon...that primitive earthling stuff?

MORK) No, no, no, no...the new space race, your Eminenceness. Mi-Sex. That is, their new album on CBS Records called "Space Race". I am here to invite you and many Earthlings to the Musicians Club : 94 Chalmers St, Surry Hills, where you will see Mi-Sex performing their new album "Space Race", on the 21st of May, 7pm.

ORSON) How do I get to go to this preview, Mork?

Morks signs off with "Na-nu na-nu".

NOTE: I'm almost certain CBS Australia paid original Mork & Mindy actors Robin Williams and Ralph James to voice the Mork and Orson parts, they are simply TOO alike throughout the entire duologue to be others copying them.

The Musicians Club used to hold about 200 people comfortably (I put some gigs on there myself back in 1980) - it wasn't huge...so I doubt that CBS would have pressed more than say, 200 of this - they had their own pressing plant here after all, and wouldn't have been confined by the pressing-quantity restrictions placed on other clients - it was common for CBS to press only 100 - 200 of their in-house promo releases (I had friends there at the plant as I used to press releases for my own label with them a couple of years after this, and was privy to all sorts of pressing-quantity info...merely by insisting on asking! It was a great insight into just how the promo department operated, quantity-wise. I had similar contacts at Festival's pressing plant, and was again privy to the same information).

And because the 7" had to be taken to the gig, and was effectively redundant once the bearer was inside, I doubt very many of this survived. The RAM editor did not attend, hence the fine condition of this one, which simply remained in his collection all that time.

CONDITION:

COVER: ( EX- )...just has mild ringwear and a few equally minor creases and edge-scuffs(see pix)...

VINYL: ( EX- )...playing side is EX- with just a few light scuffs/very thin 'hair-line' marks...other (blank) side has more marks and scuffs...but naturally that's irrelevant since you don't play that side...

LABELS: (Side One: MINT / Side Two: MINT )...has NO spindle marks on labels...
