“In a time when variety in sound means a mere flip of the dial for a succession of sounds ranging from bossa nova to swinging baroque, pretty Jackie Ross has emerged with the simple sound of “heart”.

Jackie is one of the most compelling, talented new singing stars to blaze before the public.  Her style is opposed to the cool, urbane image so familiar to present day jazz and pop.  She reveals a keen grasp of soulful sounds and a versatility that will spread wings and take her to success she hasn’t even dreamed about.

She has been compared to the greats, like Bessie Smith . . . and among her contempories, her name is mentioned with Aretha Franklin, whom she admires.  Irrevocably, she is Jackie Ross and no one else.

The standard success story doesn’t apply to Jackie Ross.  Eighteen and foxy, she jet-propelled her way to the top drawer of vocalists, without years of travel and tears.  It seems like only yesterday that she was singing rock ‘n’ roll in a North Side club in Chicago when Bill Lee, a family friend, introduced her to the Chess family.

Although this is her debut album, you can’t say that this record marks the birth of a star.  Jackie Ross was a star as of her initial single, “Selfish One”, which scored on the hit charts for a significant run.  However, you can say this is an auspicious debut.  The public’s overwhelming response to “Selfish One” and “I’ve Got The Skill” quite naturally resulted in this group of songs, sewn in Jackie fashion, packaged in hand-tailored tunes.

“Full Bloom” will make fans shout and thrill the newcomers.

A St. Loouis native, Jackie arrived in Chicago with her economy size family after her father’s death in 1953.  The youngest in her family, she now calls Chicago home although her singing career started in St. Louis at the ripe old age of three.  Sundays were literally dedicated to church and “making joyful noises unto the Lord”.  She sang at the morning services and joined her mother’s gospel show on radio in the evenings.  It is easy to understand why she says, “I have always loved to sing”.

With an early background steeped in Negro church music, Jackie has managed to avoid tricky, gospel type mannerisms – she sings the real thing and her interpretations with a rollicking fervor.  It is interesting to note that Jackie Ross doesn’t make her stage appearance an endurance test for the physically fit.  She doesn’t advertise acrobatic nonsense.  Her voice works for her as it gives forth quivering sounds.

Still under twenty years old, Jackie shows all signs of broadening her world into what she verbalizes as becoming “more of a jazz voice”.  Nancy Wilson’s climb to fame started off in much the same way.

Happenings start off with that huge success, “Selfish One . . . oh, yeah” and sets the tone for two sides of stimulating, hand clappin’ songs.  With a bevy of male voices she leads into a bouncy “Everything But Love”.  There is no doubt that she means every word.

Lo and behold! Shades of the east in her rendition of “I’ve Got The Skill” which shows her humorous side.  She snuggles up to this one, curls around it, squeezes the melody and shouts to the skies.

“Change You Ways” again demonstrates the mixture of her delicate tones and the sheer dynamic muscle of her voice.

One of the real beauties of this particular session is “I Had A Talk With My Man” which features an organ and gospel phrasing that suits her with precision.  If this doesn’t flip you, nothing will.  “I Had A Talk With My Man” also points up to the certain sweetness and child-like quality that pervades her voice.  She modulates with ease.  Incidently, Jackie learned this song, leaning over the shoulder of A & R Exec. Billy Davis in about two minutes.  Listen closely and you will find Jackie’s version rivals Mitty Collier’s hit and that is really saying something.

For infectious, irresistible rhythm, try on for size, her “Be Sure You Know”.

Among the goodies are two standards, “Summertime” and “Misty” – both proof of Jackie’s versatility and tender touch.
