MOHAMED NUR GRIK & FATUMA AHMED “Hemisei / Ghemivai” 45 (Somalrecord, c. 1970s?/Italian ORIGINAL!!)

The second of two records up this week from SOMALIA…or at least Somali artists released in Italy (or maybe Italian Somaliland? There’s obviously Italian all over the center label, anyway). Not that it makes a huge difference, since every Somali record is worth its weight in gold, and this one is no exception. Fatuma Ahmed I’ve actually heard of before (and she is absolutely beautiful here!), but Mohamed Nur Grik…other than the other single featuring him that I just put up for sale (assuming someone hasn’t nabbed it by the time you read this), I’ve never heard of him. He’s really stellar, too, so I hope he’s at least famous among Somalis! A total gem of a record, RARER THAN RARE (Somalia’s main record label, Light & Sound, got a label retrospective/reissue a few years ago, but who has ever heard of “Somalrecord”? I know I haven’t!), and obviously a once-in-a-lifetime find…as in, I’ve been collecting records for most of my lifetime and this is the one time I’ve managed to own more than one Somali record at a time! They’re that scarce, and as you can hear below, they’re also really, really great. A must have for the lover of the African rarities!

Condition: Record is VG+ to VG, with moderate surface noise throughout, and a few louder pops here or there. Remarkably good condition, given that usually you’re lucky to find Somali records at all…
