MOJO NAVIGATOR issue #13, April 1967. Founded by Greg Shaw & David Harris in August 1966, Mojo Navigator from San Francisco is generally recognized as the very first rock music zine anywhere, along with Crawdaddy from the Eastcoast. Its historical value and connection to the early Haight Ashbury scene is extraordinary, and thanks to the excellent writing and editing of legend Greg Shaw (later of Bomp, RPM magazine, Voxx, etc) it holds up as fine reading today, unlike some of its colleagues.

This issue has James Gurley from Big Brother & the Holding Co on the cover (see scan), and contains a lengthy interview with the great Blues Magoos, which has never been reprinted. There's also articles on Phil Spector and his record labels, a scoop regarding the Lovin' Spoonful-related pot bust in San Francisco (which would eventually lead to that group's downfall), a funny editorial wherein Shaw knocks Crawdaddy, and various news items concerning the Daily Flash, Mystery Trend, Blackburn & Snow and other legendary Bay Area bands. All that said, the most remarkable aspect may be the review section, which has lengthy pieces on the 2nd Love LP, the 1st Electric Prunes, the first Tim Buckley, the first Buffalo Springfield, and perhaps best of all, a previously undocumented and never reprinted review of the first 13th Floor Elevators LP, "Psychedelic Sounds". Greg Shaw's somewhat dubious analysis of "The End" by the Doors is also a fun read. There is a full-page Grateful Dead ad with an awesome Rick Griffin design (see scan).

Here's the "lost" part: if you search the net, you can find a website with scans of "all" Mojo Navigator issues -- except this one. Apparently Greg Shaw didn't have this issue on hand, and so ultimately this is the Mojo Navigator issue that almost noone has read! Following this issue, there was one more (#14, August 1967) before the magazine folded and those involved moved on to greener pastures. The magazine is in overall very good condition, with some minor creases from folding and light foxing along the edges from storage, but NO writing and NO tearing whatsoever. The binding is tight, and the spine is neat. There is some moist discoloration on the back cover (see scan), along with an address label and a stamp. Overall I'd rate this a strong VG++, or 7.5 out of 10. Due to their rarity and historical value Mojo Navigators usually sell for $100+, here's a chance to pick one up at a lower price.

All items are graded M/M-/Ex/Vg++/Vg+/Vg/Vg-/G/F/P based on both aural and visual aspects. “M” corresponds to 10/10 on a 1-10 scale, while “P” equals 1/10. I rarely offer records below Vg+. This is a grading system used by many LP dealers, and I use it for other types of items as well. Grading for LPs/45s is disc/sleeve.
