When the Monkees recorded this album, in late 1968, they were fighting internal and external demons, so to say, and were nearing disintegration. Clearly disillusioned with the show business, they mustered some energy to record a viable psychedelic album – in many ways their masterpiece as well as a swan song (although they went on to record a few more, mediocre, albums). The crew on this soundtrack includes in impressive cast of characters, such as Frank Zappa as "critic" . Jack Nicholson is also rumored to be in the cast. The album sparkles with psych vibrations, LA-style circa 1968 and includes one of the most gorgeous ballads the band ever recorded ("The Porpoise song"). But then, how many Monkees BALLADS have you heard before? The original "mirror" cover is LITERALLY UNTOUCHED BY HUMAN HAND – STILL FACTORY SEALED, AFTER ALMOST 40 YEARS !!!

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(b)            The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(c)             The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)            Mono copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(e)             Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         The delicate “foil” cover has a few air 'bubbles' along the opening edge (this is a common problem with most surviving copies of this album. Rest assured this is only a minor flaw; the cover is really gorgeous

-         NOTE: a few light abrasions on the front side appear to be on the shrink wrap, NOT on the cover itself.
