Purchased from a very desirable , large record collection about 25 years ago from The BBC Gramophone Library! Never need to upgrade from this copy! Please note , This is a genuine original and not a reisue and this is totaly complete! Never seen in this absolutely stunning condition! I defy any one to find as better copy after 45 years! I have play tested the vinyl one time prior to this listing at very loud volume on a top system! The Audio plays as new in my opinion! Looks and sounds like new! The fully laminated cover which features the front, primarily glossy black is also in outstanding condion! If any of these albums appear on Ebay the covers are nearly always in a terrible state! This is an Archive copy! Very, Very collectable indeed like this!
Monks, are a garage rock band, formed by American GIs who were based in Germany in the mid to late 1960s. They reunited in 1999 and have continued to play concerts, although no new studio recordings have been made. Monks stood out from the music of the time, and have developed a cult following amongst many musicians and music fans!
All the members were American GIs stationed in Germany in the mid-sixties. They began playing together in 1964, calling themselves the 5 Torquays. They covered Chuck Berry songs and played music inspired by the British beat groups, but the band experimented together musically. Band member Gary Burger said: "It probably took us a year to get the sound right. We experimented all the time. A lot of the experiments were total failures and some of the songs we worked on were terrible. But the ones we kept felt like they had something special to them. And they became more defined over time."
Black Monk Time The Monks played The Top Ten Club in Hamburg, where The Beatles had played earlier in the 1960s! Upon their discharge from the army the band developed a distinctive musical style, and took up a distinctive name and image to go with it. The transition from their earlier, more conventional and less provocative aesthetic to the abrasive and cutting-edge sound of their Black Monk Time period was partly induced by the influence of "a pair of loopy existentialist visionaries" called Walther Niemann and Karl-H.-Remy. Remy, a university student of design in Ulm, and Niemann, a student of Folkwang Arts Academy in Essen, "designed" the Monks as "anti-Beatles": short hair with tonsures, black clothes, ropes around the neck, image of being hard and dangerous. At the beginning of 1965, Dave Day and Roger Johnston, on a whim, got their heads shaved into monks' tonsures. The rest of the band followed their lead, and to complete the image, the band took to wearing a uniform - all black, sometimes in cassocks, with nooses worn as neckties.[citation needed] Burger describes the band's "look" as completely their management's decision.
Eddie Shaw later claimed in his band autobiography Black Monk Time that the nooses were symbolic of the metaphorical nooses that all humanity wear. His explanation exhibited a literal translation of gallows humor. The same attitude seems to be exhibited by the blunt lyrics of the band. The brazen attitude toward sensitive subjects was reportedly not well met. They received confused audience reactions at concerts, and one attendee attempted to strangle Gary Burger at a show in Hamburg, for perceived blasphemy.
As of August 2006, lead singer Gary Burger serves as mayor of Turtle River, Minnesota. On January 10, 2008 Dave Day died of a heart attack. Eddie Shaw went on to play in a progressive rock band called Copperhead in the 1970s and went on to become a fiction writer, who also wrote their autobiography Black Monk Time.[1] Shaw's fictional work is based on his experiences growing up in Nevada and is published under his full name, Thomas Edward Shaw!
In 2006 play loud! productions completed the documentary film Monks: The Transatlantic Feedback in conjunction with the release of the album silver monk time - a tribute to the monks. Artists to have acknowledged the Monks as an influence include: Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The White Stripes, Henry Rollins, The Fuzztones, the Beastie Boys and Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys, as well as The Fall. The latter covered both "I Hate You" and "Oh, How to Do Now" on their 1990 album Extricate (under the titles "Black Monk Theme Part I" and "Black Monk Theme Part II", respectively), as well as the song "Shut Up!" on their 1994 album Middle Class Revolt. The Fall have also covered "Higgledy-Piggledy" for the Monks tribute CD Silver Monk Time. The White Stripes named Monks as one of their key influences, noting that "their melodies were pop destructive"

Black Monk Time was the first album by the rock group The Monks, and the only album they released during their original incarnation. The album was produced by Jimmy Bowien, and recorded March 1966 in Cologne, Germany. It was released May 1966 by Polydor in Germany. It was described in the mid-1990s by Julian Cope as a "lost classic",[1] the album has since been reissued more than once, and has gained a broader, albeit still underground, appreciation and fame. Of the album's raw style, and the context of its production, Cope writes: ... NO-ONE ever came up with a whole album of such dementia. The Monks' Black Monk Time is a gem born of isolation and the horrible deep-down knowledge that no-one is really listening to what your [sic] saying. And the Monks took full artistic advantage of their lucky/unlucky position as American rockers in a country that was desperate for the real thing. They wrote songs that would have been horribly mutilated by arrangers and producers had they been back in America. But there was no need for them to clean up their act, as the Beatles and others had had to do on returning home, for there were no artistic constraints in a country that liked the sound of beat music but had no idea about its lyric content !

The Vinyl
On initial inspection this vinyl looks absolutely stunning in my opinion! The vinyls playing surface looks awesome\superbe in fact I can barely even see a blemish at all! This lays perfectly flat on the turntable, retaining its super glossy appearance from new, and indeed looks almost like new in my opinion! I must emphisise that I can see (no) marks (no) needle sratches, or indeed any audio sounding marks what so ever! An absolutely stunning copy! Any marks that could possibly be seen under a strong light would be sleeve removal only, and certainly not detrimentle to the audio at all! (To be honest I can't see anything)!
The Audio
I have played this through one time at very loud volume on a top system at very very loud volume! In breaf This audio is as good as it gets in my opinion! This plays through on my systems with almost cd quality! In fact I have imortalised this audio by digitising the play of this album to cd because it sounds so impresive! Please note! I would class myself as highly critical when it comes down to the audio quality. It has always been my, almost obsession! Please look at my completed listings of records that I have sold of this calaber and you will see that I normally get it right!
The Audio is in my opinion as good as it gets, absolutely top!, top! audio on all frequenies! I heard absolutely (no) distortion (no) clicks or pops and certainly (no) jumps or skips at all! Very near as perfect on my systems! , and beleive me this is extreemely rare to find on this 46 year old vinyl! This vinyl is truly exceptional indeed! You will find it very hard to find better anywhere in my opinion! Absolutelyy impossible to find like this!
Please note! I always add this disclaimer! I have given my honest opinion as usual on the audio quality as i hear it! And although I never heard any problems at all on my systems,,, Please allow for the odd light static on in some quiet places definately!, (not consistant through out the audio) Please remember that this is a genuine 30 year old 1st pressing that would have originally been played on a 30 year old system!! My honest opinion is that this audio will be very hard to surpass in any format!
The Labels
On initial inspection it is hard to see that this has even been played. I find it hard to see any spidering at at,, certainly no ware around the spindle hole it is perfecvly round! Only if scrutinised angled to the light could possibly any spidering be seen. (please note, this vinyl has barely had a handful of plays only)
The Record Steeve
This is plain white poly lined sleeve with no splits or tares light creasing with age
The Cover
This is the original fully laminated cover features the correct catalogue number at the rear (only 1st press) in absolutely superbe condition throughout! Please note! that due to the nature of the colour being primarily black these are very hard to find in good condition like this copy! Firstly there are no splits or tares Superbe spine,, Absolutely super glossy laminate in appearence any ringware you would have to look hard angled to the light to notice in my opinion only at the front! The front and also the rear is truly superbe ! amaizingly I find it hard to see any real rubbing ware at the edges worth to mention! Any creases are extreemely minimal only really noticed if scrutinised in my opinion! Please note this vinyl is now stored seperately from the sleeve and cover! Important note! This is the original 1st issue cover, any storageware is very minimal indeed!. Overall a superpe press original This must be at least excellent plus in my opinion! Unbelievably rare like this after 46 years!
