Where do we start with this one!? A landmark in the evolution of hard bop, The Sidewinder is widely regarded as one of THE all-time great jazz albums, and you should probably own a copy... which is easier to do now, thanks to this reissue in Blue Note's Essential series. Trumpeter Morgan was only 26 when he made this album but already had an impressive CV, having worked as a sideman for Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane before he was out of his teens, and served a stint in the Jazz Messengers. He'd cut several previous long-players as band leader, starting in the late 50s, but it was 1964's 'The Sidewinder' that captured the public's imagination, not least because the boogaloo-flavoured title track was released as a single and unexpectedly hit the pop charts. It really doesn't get much better than this, so if you don't know the album already, do your ears a favour and get involved!
