Description

MORGEN :  MORGEN   (Probe CPLP 4507 S)

The obscure group's extremely psychedelic self-titled first & only LP; a First Issue from 1969;
the original release on Command / Probe / ABC Records / "Grand Award Record Co. Inc."

Musicians in MORGEN include: STEVE MORGEN on vocals & guitar, RENNIE GENOSSA on bass,
BARRY STOCK on rhythm guitar & BOB MAIMAN on drums.

Produced by MURRAY SHIFFRIN & THE COMMAND PROBE STAFF

VINYL : NEAR MINT minus (NM-) :  Heavy, black & shiny with a few very faint surface marks that are strictly cosmetic. Near-perfect labels suggest that this rare LP was not played often.

Record Labels:  Very sharp ; on Probe/ABC ;  Black with silver print (see scan); a few very faint spindle marks but no stamps, writing etc.

COVER : VERY GOOD plus (VG+) : a totally black & white package;  thick stock, gatefold (open-up) cover;  all three front cover seams are intact; tiny hole punch on front, top left; back cover bottom seam has a 2 inch split in the center & a half inch split at the opening edge; back cover top seam has a 2 inch split at the opening edge; spine is basically intact with minor flaking; the back cover seams also have flaking. The mostly white front cover has minor yellowing and minor ring wear.  Black back cover shows more visible ring wear. There is minor corner wear with flaking. The mostly black inner cover shows only very slight wear with spine intact. Opening edge shows minor wear. Overall this cover shows its age but remains in above average shape (VG+) with no writing, stamps, tears or lengthy splits. Its flaws, except for the hole punch, were mainly caused by 37 years of shelf wear. Some less conservative cover-graders might rate this one as VG++. I think it comes close.

(Scan shows the bottom half on the insert with leader Steve Morgen's photo going sideways)

THE BEAR says:
"Ah yes, the obscure but clever & certainly acid-drenched MORGEN... This was one of those one-shot, little-known Sixties bands that never got the exposure they deserved. Take for instance another group signed to ABC/ Probe at that time, The Soft Machine. The Softs found much more fame & fortune back then due to a wonderful U.S. Tour as the warm-up band for The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Alas, MORGEN  never got such a break. Even so, a few of us picked up the LP strictly on the basis of the very cool front cover which features a reproduction of "The Scream" by Edvard Munch. Both sides of the record open very strong. The first tune, "Welcome to the Void", definitely deserved FM radio airplay. And the opener on Side Two, a track simply called "Purple" is absolutely a classic of the Psychedelic genre & my favorite on the LP. (Don't miss the wild guitar on this track.) Your gentle seller was in college back in 1969 & I remember those heady days quite well. (In fact, I have been hosting a public radio show called "THE PSYCHEDELICATESSEN" since 1990 & feel like I know a little bit about that style of music... ) Anyway, miss this very nice original copy of MORGEN at your own peril !! The title was not a big seller back in '69 thus there are not many first issues still floating around. This particular one offers a very clean copy of the LP housed in a gatefold cover that shows a bit of wear but is still well worth collecting. A nice bonus is the Near Mint fold-out insert with the complete tripped-out lyrics plus what are probably the only known photos of this mysterious group. The LP was wrenched directly from The Bear's personal stash. Several more very groovy psychedelic albums will be appearing in the Bear's Wax 2 listings in the coming weeks but trust me, this will be the only copy of MORGEN going up for bid. Psych-lovers: don't snooze !!"

A SIMPLE VINYL GRADING SYSTEM :

Mint : Still Sealed/Unplayed/Unopened
Mint minus (M-): New and Possibly Unplayed; a rarely used grade.
Near Mint (NM): Like-new, with little or no visible wear; very collectible.
Near Mint minus (NM-): Almost like-new, perhaps very slight signs of age/play/wear that are strictly cosmetic.
Excellent (EX) or Very Good double-plus (VG++): Way above average, very nice, no major flaws; played, not abused.
Very Good plus (VG+): An above average used album; a few visible surface marks/paper scuffs; slight surface noise.
Very Good (VG): An average used LP, far from perfect; w/ a few light scratches. Some noise; plays through, no skips.
Very Good minus (VG-): Reveals a lot of wear when viewed or spun but is not actually defective or warped. Possibly worth keeping until a better copy appears.

LP Cover grading is a much less exact, more subjective science. Generally, the truly collectible grades range from Mint to Excellent or VG++ depending on general wear. Main cover flaws such as split seams or spine, ring wear, cut or bent corners, hole punches, writing, water damage etc. should always be included in a proper auction listing. These factors combine to determine the grade. Still, as my old boss & mentor Jess used to tell 'em : "You can't play the cover". Please e-mail for even more details about any LP cover, insert, poster or inner sleeve listed by your friends at Bear's Wax 2  aka  CyBear's Wax.
