Label/Format: Harvest – two superb examples of the famous green and yellow format. These have the original ‘gramophone Co Ltd’ text on the rims with matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces ultra fine, few and faint. This top quality record appears very little played and sounds beautiful.

Brief Info: A late recording for Harvest, this fine Move record plays as good as it looks – and that is very impressively. Featuring of course the multi-talented Roy Wood who later featured on the off-shoot bands ELO and Wizzard. The delicate flimsy cover has a few, mostly quite fine scuffs on the back, but that apart, it also looks lovely – the front especially is lovely. Lacking the usual rubbing and ringwear most seem to acquire, but the marks on the back will mean not for the purist or highly discerning. However, if nigh-on perfect audio quality is the most important factor, this splendid record delivers exactly that.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): purely based on the marks on the back near the centre. A single, unlaminated format that has a delicate textured front. The smooth back has three large flipbacks which is quite unusuall for a cover of this time especially with no laminate. It was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and is patented. The Harvest promotional inner sleeve is also included.

Cover Front: This is a really clean and attractive front, especially when many are seen ringworn and badly rubbed. A little corner tip rubbing and a small crease on the bottom pair and a very gentle thumb surface crease near the top right corner, but little else. Any rim impression very faint indeed with no ink loss or ringwear. Colourful, fresh, this really is a front to admire.

Cover Back: By 1971, external flipbacks were largely a thing of the past and lovely to see three large and near perfect examples on this lovely sleeve. These are clean and solid with minimal traces of any end burring. All solidly stuck down with no lifting or damage, flipbacks are so prone to damage from catching on other covers, these have none. The smooth back panel is clean but does a little fine creasing towards the left, this shows little. The issue are scratch or scuff marks near the centre area, most fairly fine but they do show, but to a lesser extent with normal full-on viewing. My grading takes this into account, minus them I would have graded excellent double-plus.

Top Edge: Thin and delicate, just a small centrall rub and a light one near the right corner. Still very straight and neat.

Bottom Edge: Near moderate rubbing to the left and right corner areas, the rest has hardly any at all. This vulnerable bottom edge is seldom seen with so much of it’s ink still intact and solid.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear or thickening, even viewed end-on. Record entered on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced at all.

Spine and Text: A very fragile spine with deep pinched ends, all areas are solid and very neat with minimal traces of any wear. Barely any compression and the text is very close to perfect.

Corners: Light tip rubs on the top, moderate with the odd tip crease at the bottom. Fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very delicate cover and still attractive, the front especially. With the rear marks, not for the more discerning cover collector as stated, but the early pressed record more than compensates.

The Inner Sleeve: EX++, the but polylining has been replaced with a Japan anti-static Nagaoka soft lining. This apart, it is a superb and still very fresh, clean inner with no creasing or edge splits. Just moderate darkening of the seam adhesive that few seem to avoid.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably even better. A super visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. Any surface marks mostly ultra fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality, very early pressed Harvest record plays even above its high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this original pre-EMI pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, my first copy of this for ages. The record could prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
