This 4 record set of radio transcription discs contains Madame Chiang Kai-shek (Soong Mei-ling)'s important address at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on April 4th, 1943. She had spent the previous two months touring the United States, giving speeches in an effort to raise support for China's efforts against the Japanese during the Second World War. Her Hollywood Bowl appearance was her final speech of the visit, and 30,000 people turned out to listen, including many movie stars. Unlike her talk before the House of Representatives in February, the Hollywood Bowl speech was never officially released, but it was made available to certain radio stations via transcription discs such as this. The number of sets that still exist must be small - we can only find references to a few in library collections, and no evidence of one being offered for sale.
Note that this is NOT the entire speech - a few minutes at the start are missing. She started speaking before the recording team was prepared, so what you get here is everything that was captured at the time - the full speech does not exist in audio format. Possibly this explains why it was never officially released to the public.
The records play at 78 rpm and are Va-Co brand recording discs, with a Los Angeles address at the bottom of each label. They play with a fair amount of background noise. The set comes in the original Va-Co company paper sleeve, though a large piece is missing.
